Let’s get started as we do every single day it’s time to pop the top on another edition of AFR with Bud Light drink easy um as we uh mentioned LSU baseball right now is wrapping up uh the fourth game of the weekend I should I shouldn’t say that they’re wrapping up the weekend

They’re right in the midst of the fourth game they’re currently uh top four leading Central Arkansas 4 to one right now freshman Kate Anderson on the bump and looking really good we’ll talk about that in a little bit um I’m assuming a lot of you are probably watching the

Game live right now that’s cool maybe you’re watching the game listening to us let me um be not certainly not the first but the next to sort of give you you my recap of of the baseball weekend we’ll do that uh first of all congrats to Hayden trinsky was named SEC co-player

Of the week or co-c player of the week for his efforts and a lot of guys had great weekends as you might imagine with the way that LSU scored 11 runs against VMI they beat Central Arkansas two to nothing and then 27 to5 they beat VMI on Sunday but trinsky was awesome all

Throughout the weekend seven of 11 hit a homer four RBI eight runs scored that’s actually up to nine runs scored now because he’s already scored in this game against Central Arkansas so 636 batting average over the weekend I’d say uh pretty good pretty pretty pretty good

For Hayden trinsky so your SEC player of the week here on opening weekend um there were a lot of things to highlight uh both good and maybe that maybe not so good as well for LSU so I’ll just kind of run through it and give you my uh my

Bird’s eye view of the baseball weekend um LSU played VMI while we were on the air Saturday or Friday and I know a lot of people are going to look at Thatcher herd and the fact that um he didn’t extend deep into the ball game and maybe

Be a little concerned I’m not in any way concerned about that jard y he took the ball in G in shoved for six Innings to win the national championship for you I I’m not worried about that your herd he’s he’s great he’s going to be great

This year the the weird thing was he you know he was cruising it looked like he gotten out of the third he threw that back door breaking ball and it it he was like walking off the mount it looked like he had called strike three instead

They called it a ball he goes walk B and just like that the lineup turns over and it’s four straight hits and he’s out of the game I’m not worried about Thatcher herd it doesn’t sound like Jay Johnson’s worried about Thatcher herd either I thought uh Thatcher was great for eight

Hitters I don’t I think he was perfect through eight hitters um you know I thought he threw a really good pitch on the 3-2 count to the nine hitter and U walked him unfortunately there and then um you know we got the B you know pitchers did a great job managing the

Running game today I think they made three outs on the bases but uh the top of the order is pretty good of Greater consequence I think is what Jay Johnson chose to do over the weekend situationally with his pitchers Sam Dutton came in at the top of the eighth

With runers on second and third up to two out and one-1 got a ground out to shortstop we saw Sam Dutton remember as a freshman they were trying to figure out who they could count on in what roles some start games for LSU That season maybe that that’s a moment it’s

Going to be a situational stopper for LSU go get that high leveraged out or that high leverag inning so that was awesome to see in that spot and then we saw Gage jump pitch the ninth and he I I don’t know that I can add anything anyone else hasn’t already said he was

Awesome um how much of that was just completely opening it up because it was he knew he had to only get three outs as opposed to pacing your as a starter but I want to see more as does everyone offensively look trinsky and Jones both Homer they were awesome brazwell went 0

For four in the leadoff spot and that was a change that we saw as the weekend went along because MC Bingham was in the leadoff spot in game two in the last two games now it’s been Steven milum who y’all better look out cu that little

Dude’s coming he is a giant ball of Fu energy you know what I mean like that’s what it like he will stand on top of the plate he will wear pitches he will hit ground balls he will run he will get on base he could he showed you he could

Play anywhere on the infield he played some third on Sunday we’ve seen him play second um he is the the if you the whole the the dirt bag for it like you want that dude that’s him I don’t know how you keep that guy out of the lineup I get it you’re you’re

Just into the fourth game of the season right now but boy it would have to be like a massive collapse for that kid not to be in the lineup when you get to to conference play because he’s just I just assume with that type of attitude and

Energy he’s going to keep pushing and pushing and pushing so um much more about Steven milum actually here was uh Jay Johnson on Steven mum’s opening weekend he’s a great player he’s he’s played great over the last month had a tough fall it’s a jump like I think I

Said this in one of our things like going from high school baseball in Los cruus New Mexico to this is like going to the moon and it took him a little while in the fall to get going but we knew we had a really good player I mean

I’ve known him since he was in seventh grade you know so not a surprise at all that today was just a continuation of uh what he’s been doing in January and February and uh you know he’s going to get plenty more opportunities and a winning player what a great sound bite

Man going from High School in Las cruus to this is like going to the moon uh he’s figured it out he’s gotten his Moon legs under him so to speak um game two Saturday was miserable it was like I don’t know in the 30s the wind was that

Was thank God I wasn’t there I the wind was blowing straight in and it was just all pitching in defense um Luke hullan was awesome on a day where he knew the field was going to play to him he didn’t even need he struck out 10 and maybe the

Most impressive thing is Holan was sitting like 92 it wasn’t like I mean 10 strikeouts and five and a third that’s like what we expected from Paul sches but hullman it wasn’t the arm it was the pitch ability up in the zone down in the zone inside outside mixing speeds he was

Awesome just the way he pitched that game was so good and there was one giant spot in the fourth inning if you’re watching the game it was he went he went double single and so you had two on and then he struck out the side after that

In a in what was at the time still is it still scoreless at that point it was scoreless I couldn’t remember if uh got the milum got the single in the bottom of the fourth it was in the bottom of the fourth and myum got the single to

Put sh up W nothing so um Holman was awesome it’s what you’d expect poised he was great um one guy that we’ve heard a lot about um is uoa the um uh the jco transfer from California I tell youall all the time man when when these guys

Play for the first time it’s the first time I see him I didn’t see him in in the fall and haven’t seen him in all the any of the preseason workouts or anything like that uh killer handlebar mustache by the way for your boy when your boy rolled

Out there with the handlebar mustache I was like oh my God but he look he only threw two pitches he threw a breaking pitch at 82 miles hour and a fast ball at 96 but the way he mixed it and shoved was awesome I mean he came in with a

One- nothing lead after Herring had walked two and he came and got strikeout strike out and got back in the Dugout which was awesome to see speaking of situational uh pitching how about DJ Primo two on two out in the eighth got a round out I mean that’s another guy who

Just didn’t pitch last year um as he was coming along and maybe we’re going to see him in that role Sam dunon got the save uh in game two so a lot to like we mentioned milm um got the batted lead off in a day where there wasn’t much

Offense he was on base all four times um he didn’t lead off excuse me Bingham let off in game two but but milm was on base all four times and then Sunday was just a total to I mean that’s one of those days it was 27 to5 LS you tied a program

Record with 27 hits and and God bless the first batter of the game was milm who hits a little lazy fly into shallow right the second baseman’s going back the right fielder should have called him off coming in didn’t went off the second baseman’s glove so you get on base and

Then the it just the the merry go round started at that point um of note Jain Coleman started gave you three scoreless LSU’s pitching combined for 12 walks which was atrocious um and maybe the most disappointing was was cam Johnson I I’m trust me I’m not panicking cam

Johnson is the highest rated recruit ever to show up on LSU’s campus he was the number 11 player in the country in this class and he’s a lefty we’ve talked about him a ton somebody told me they comped him to CC Sabathia and like I I

Hadn’t seen him but he kind of does remind you of like young CC before CC like started eating boxes of Captain Crunch and gained 100 pounds like even down to like the high leg kick With The Lean Back the kind of the a little bit

Of the Flinch on or the fidget on the on the delivery um you kind of like the little arm coock on the delivery even like the sort of unkempt look a little bit like the untucked jersey and that now CCE wore his hat down and cocked to

Have a great career here as a matter of fact Jay Johnson even was asked what his message to cam was after that that Rocky first inning he had I just TR tried to get him reset and um you know it didn’t work for the second in but when he came

Back in I was like Hey for three hitters in a row Cam that went as bad as it probably you could think it could go right he’s like yeah and I was like well there’s one run up on the board so that tells you how good that you are and can

Be and so just try to be positive in that regard he did he came back and got a fly out and got a strike out to end the inning uh but then went back out there and it it just didn’t go well so in any event man better days ahead for

Cam Johnson but look uh takeaways from the weekend got to see more from brazwell man because mym is coming and however however you’re going to figure it out if it’s milum at second and Pearson goes to right and Pearson and brown platoon and right or if milm goes to short and

Pearson stays at second and brown plays right I I don’t know like Jay Johnson’s smart he’s a great coach he’s GNA figure all that out but one thing’s for certain is like stepen I don’t know how you take Steven milum out of the lineup so somehow someway the guys around him we

Going to have to figure it out cuz that guy has earned more playing time through your first weekend and then you know we’ll see how the um how the pitching rolls stack up but that’s the fun part about this this time of season man you know you get this first month of the

Season before you get to conference play to Tinker and Dabble and mix with lineups and and use guys in certain spots to see how they perform and uh that’s what Jay Johnson this staff are doing in the early going here so Tigers start 3-0 uh they’re beating Central

Arkansas right now 4 to1 bottom four and um we’ll see if they can polish off a perfect 4-0 week and remember another four game weekend ahead Thursday to Sunday so they go Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday before they take off for Houston they’ll pay play rice next Wednesday in Houston they’ll stay in

Aaron to this point more that we know like can you just tell us what we know encapsulate the story as of right now so from what we pretty much know from the sheriff’s department there was an altercation at one apartment complex that Trey Holly and his family live into

And that spilled into the other apartment complex and we know three people arrested Trey Holly another in individual then of course Trey Holly a relative of him who is a juvenile so we know there was shots fired at this point we don’t know who fired the shots uh and

If all three of them fired shots who hit the two uh victims of course there was a male and a female do we know yet Aaron uh so if the incident the shooting took place at the apartment complex where Trey Holly and his family live do we

Know if he just happened to be in the apartment complex or did that shooting involve anyone with his family or anyone that he he knows yeah the sheriff’s department has said that it spilled into the other apartment complex so and if you just go from his post alone which I

Don’t know about you Matt but I thought it was a little strange I thought it was you know it was enlightening the fact that he posted something on social media and I hope he consulted with his lawyer before he did that yes but if you read

That post somewhere in the middle of he talks about he was at home now I don’t know if he’s referencing he was at home in Farmerville talking about he wasn’t in Rouge is’s back in Farmerville or if he was referencing he was in his apartment or in his home when the shooting took

Place that’s that was my my initial reaction too did he mean I was going to ask that question you know if that if he meant he was at his home his physical home or his home town as it were stated there uh Aaron diet’s with a sports

What I understand the advocate reported I thought it was a Baton Rouge attorney but don’t quote me on that no okay that that’s that’s totally fine um is there is there anything else as of this point that we know or can expect um as far as

When Trey Holly might be in court next or what the next steps are from the Union Parish Sheriff’s Department yes I I do not know that information okay um man it’s it’s such a um it’s a story that c that I think caught Everybody by by surprise the way that it

Has happened but if I if I would ask you one thing just to I am going to ask you to speculate um when you when you read Trey Holly’s uh post maybe not even speculated Aon just your opinion when you read the post what was your uh impression of what Trey Holly

Shocked me just because of the second degree attempted murder charge and just known a little bit about Trey and listen we throw out the words you know Hometown hero all the time you know it’s cliche but you literally look at a kid how many times have we seen it when a kid is

Still in high school where they have a day for him or they give him the key to the city this all happened to Trey I mean this was November 4th November 5th of 2022 after he broke the state’s alltime leading rusher record I mean it’s pretty

Heady stuff and for this to come full cycling for this to happen in his City to the hometown hero it is just a bizarre storyline yeah we will um we’ll certainly hope for the best and that if there were crimes committed whoever committed them are brought to justice

Talking about the Trey Holly um story and I I didn’t have much to add because when you’re talking about attempted second degree murder those charges are so real and so sincere that any type of speculation is uh not only unwarranted it’s Reckless and irresponsible um what I did say though

Is in our country we do um have a standard of innocent until proven guilty and the burden of proof falls on the accuser and there are too many instances of people who were accused of R of crimes that were wrongly accused um and I mentioned two in particular just pertaining to LSU

Football one was Lio Collins in 2015 before the NFL draft ly Collins was identified as a person of interest in murder was never charged with anything but he was identified as a person of interest someone that authorities wanted to speak to and unfortunately too many people made the

Assumption that Collins was in some way involved and they convicted him in the public and as we learned he had nothing to do whatsoever with that at all the other that I mentioned was in the summer of 2019 before the 2019 football season when we learned Clyde

Edwards elair had shot and killed a man and people made certain assumptions and what we learned after the fact was Clyde and another person were held at gunpoint and Clyde acted in self-defense so there just so many examples and this might be another one of why you let due process play out you

Let the justice system work and I don’t know about you but I here’s where I will speculate that in that I asked or o Pine in the way that I asked Aaron to when I read Trey Holly’s statement it sure was convincing wasn’t it it it wasn’t just the typical

Attorney going to bat for their client I mean Trey Holly didn’t have to say anything publicly but I don’t know that you could have been more adamant and definitive than Trey Holly was I’m again I’m not exonerating Trey Holly today but I’m sure as heck not going to convict the

Kid with what little tiny morsel of information that we all have at this point so I’ll sit and wait and watch like everyone else should and when we get the answers as to what happened we’ll know and then we’ll be able to react fully to it

But i’ I’d be lying to you if I said I wasn’t uh a a bit relieved when I saw Trey Hol statement cuz boy did it sound does he sound believable as we know more we’ll uh we’ll share more okay uh it is after further review

The Bears trade Justin Fields well would other teams move up to get either Daniels or may here’s what Dan Graziano said on uh on Monday morning there are teams that would tell you they like Drake May better but I none of those teams at least that I’ve talked to are

Got the Cardinals moving down and Atlanta going up but just look at the other possibilities like what teams conceivably could be you know willing interested in moving up to potentially take quarterback so Arizona is there at four so Daniels gets past three Arizona’s at four Arizona’s not taking a

Is just me and my wishful thinking trying to talk myself out of believing Jaden Daniel is going to Atlanta because that would be a miserable existence to have to to have to cheer against Jaden Daniels in Atlanta for as long as he’s there but I also don’t know that it

Fact that the G5 can’t keep their best players because their best players leave for power five schools and the whole question is is does the G5 formulate its own League its own Championship or do they continue to try to latch onto the te of the power

Five who just raids the G5 for talent every year through nil and the transfer portal and continues to push them further and further away from from the trough Ross notes of 247 Sports their top 100 transfers this fall cycle 20 20 of them moved from G5 or FCS

To a power five team 20 of the top 100 were g5s going to the power five last year 144 players moved up from the G5 to the power five so basically the best players in the G5 are leaving for the power five one of the people that Ross

Me and I want you to look at this through the prism of the halves in college football the LSUS the Georgia the Penn States and michigans the Oregons the halves in college football this is the Toledo athletic director quote when I talk to our fans I don’t hear a whole lot about

Should be play on your level at every level in sports ever that’s how it’s done look at every High School Association you have a 1A a 2A a 3A a 4 a a 5A and you compete for your own Championship why is it any different in college football hell we have it in

College football we’ve got division one and division two and division three yet division one is broken into these subsets and it’s motivated by one thing and one thing only money and as soon as the Hales figure out and they’re on their way how they’re going to make more money not playing the have

And then the most uh Infamous year that the Saints used the franchise tag was 2014 on Jimmy Graham and then Jimmy Graham took the Saints to arbitration where he was trying to to say that he was a receiver and not a tight end because obviously the top five the

Average of the top five contracts of receivers is much higher than tight ends that was the the large dispute ultimately they agreed to an extension but a year later the Saints had traded Jimmy Graham to to Seattle it was sort of like that was the irreparable harm

That was done and then in 2021 Marcus Williams played under the franchise tag and they did not agree to a long-term deal and as we know he agreed he he uh left for for the Ravens so since 2004 the Saints have only used the franchise tag six times since 2004 so number one

It just the Saints don’t use it that much and then when you look at this year’s roster you know the Saints last year were very um sort of uh pre they were preemptive and and aggressive in the way that they went about signing their free agents they signed Carl Granderson to an

Extension remember they extended Cam Jordan last year as well um Caesar Ruiz another player they got the deal done last year before they hit unrestricted free agency so the only two players really on on this year’s team that you’d look and say okay well who might the

Saints you know what free agents might the Saints even be interested in franchise tagging the two that we talked most prominently about that could hit free agency or jamus Winston and Michael Thomas Thomas’ deal is a little bit different but we could look at that one too just as a for instance

So jamus if they were to franchise tag jamus you’d have to pay him an average of the top five salaries of quarterbacks in the NFL the the uh expected franchise tag number for quarterbacks this year is $ 36.2 million needless to say the Saints are not going to pay jamus

Winston $ 36.2 million so you’re not going to tag jamus and then if you wanted to look at Michael Thomas like the receiver the franchise tag number for receivers this year um would be $2.2 million now again it could be 120% of the previous year salary whichever is higher for Thomas it would

Be the 20.2 million but for example a guy like Mike Evans in Tampa who was a free agent his um his number if he were if the if the Bucks were to franchise tag Mike Evans his number would be $28.4 million so like they ain’t going to

Franchise tag Mike Evans so they’re not going to pay Mike Evans 28 million bucks so you know you look at it and you say the Saints probably aren’t a candidate to franchise tag any of their players this year it’s just something worth keeping an eye on I’m going to be more

Interested in what happens around around the division because like I just mentioned Michael Tom or Mike Evans is a free agent could Mike Evans time in Tampa be done I mean he’s the best receiver in the history of that organization and he’s a likely Hall of

Famer but his time in Tampa could be done so if Baker Mayfield is back could Baker Mayfield be back without his best receiver potentially um Carolina the player most likely you know when you look at the Carolina media who they they’re talking about uh as a most likely player to be

Franchise tagged is Brian Burns so Brian Burns has been a really good pass rusher but he’s an outside linebacker he kind of has a similar conundrum that Jimmy Graham had back in the day you’d much rather be franchise tagged as a defensive end than an outside linebacker

Because the difference in the numbers is pretty you know is is pretty significant with how you’re going to be franchise Tagged so we’ll um we’ll wait and see what teams elect to use the franchise tag but as that that window opens on Tuesday but it’s just unlike that the

Start with some of those upsets because I think that is something that always catches people’s eye when you see okay well Arkansas and Vanderbilt were preseason top 10 teams and they both stumbled what did you make of of in particular the Hogs and the commodor is falling well look it’s it’s early right

And I I think the big thing is for the guys to go out there get some Innings under their belt and and you’re looking at ways if you’re a coach what do you need to clean up what are your guys doing out there did we get some reps are

We healthy uh and you want to come out with victories but I think Arkansas if you look at them we knew going in they had a great pitching staff Hagen Smith wasn’t the Haan Smith that we have seen in the past that’s a guy where you want

To go off his track record he is a stud and he’s going to pitch fantastic for the rest of the year so was a hiccup early I don’t think you worry about Arkansas Vanderbilt same thing you didn’t expect Carter Holton one of their top pitchers to uh to pitch

Central Arkansas more pitchers du any big takeaways from LSU’s four games this weekend yeah so you know I didn’t have a chance to look at the stats for today’s game because it just ended but I’m looking over the weekend I’m sitting here thinking my goodness you couldn’t

Have asked for a better situation for the coaching staff and the players themselves you the opportunity I think it was what 16 position players played I think they had 134 guys go up to the 134 played appearances 15 pitchers I think got to log in an inning it was outstanding

That’s the beauty of LSU baseball right now is they will beat you like the teams from the 90s you come in here and they’re going to run up the score they’re going to get guys the opportunities to play so when you have high-scoring games you’re going to get

Guys that can get the game experience so in the middle part toward the end part of season when you have injuries that affect players they’ve already been there they’ve already done that there’s no replacement for game speed and I just think LSU just went out there and they handled their business accordingly we

Minutes of playing time and so uh really had no impact on the game and could have checked out mentally there uh but you know for him to come out that second half uh score 16 points hit some big shots I thought is really aggressive drive into the basket uh just showed

What a weapon he can be on the offensive side yeah 16 points of course led the tiger Saturday and their upset win at South Carolina um you also found yourself down 16 and came back yeah you found yourself down 20 against Florida and came back are Are we more encouraged

By this team’s ability to come back or were we more concerned by the deficits and the hole that that it keeps digging well I’m encouraged by by the toughness and the the never give up type mindset there to get back in the game uh but obviously we got to quit getting into

That position the way we’ve come back in these games is by following a pretty simple formula that’s it’s been when we’ve been at our best which is taking care of the basketball and offense moving the ball and getting high quality shots and then defending at a high level

And cleaning up on the defense of glass uh when we haven’t done those things uh when we’ve struggled uh given up Second Chance points it’s really been too much for us to overcome and so if we want to finish the season strong uh our commitment to defend and
