I spent so much of my life not really believing in myself that running has created this new version of me that believes in himself a bit more that guy has definitely run an ultra I’m going to say out loud I’m officially training for my first 100
Mile after 7 years of running this is the one distance I always SW I would never do and the one I’ve been absolutely terrified of but it’s time to be brave and train for my first 100 mile run so I brought you here to the beaver
Challenge of Big Bear to take on my first kind of big long training session so 6 hours I’m aiming to go around about 30 m Mark and uh it’s time to see where my fitness is because I’ve got just over 3 months to run a 100
Miles 100 miles three two one and off we go okay so we’re into the first lap a of today is W he go is just time on feet 6 hours 6 hours on feet obviously I’d love to get to the nine lap which would take me to roughly
30 Mi so it’s the 3.3 mile Loop this is my first kind of big training run of this training block towards 100 miles still terrifies me saying it I’ve run 100K races before so 60-ish miles but yeah there’s a huge unknown chunk of mileage that I’m going
To have to discover what my body is capable of doing which is exciting and very terrifying in equal measure so I’m taking on the temps path 100 but wait that’s really flat and you like Hills James correct but I’m running from London to Oxford and I live just north of Oxford
It’s a short car Road home when I finish so it’s going to feel like I’m running home which is pretty Epic there we go that four done 2 hours 15 in time for a proper Pet Stop and I’m going talk to you I’m actually training 100
M a lot of my long runs so my 10 to you know 20 M runs we’ll also have another run the next day so kind of get my body used to rebuilding and constantly moving while fatigued whereas there’ll be long runs done during you know traditional training block these are
Going to be more like long hikes with my longest one are being kind of 9 to 10 hours on my feet anything more than that I’m just going to impact my ability to constantly train so he’ll train long runs back to back and a lot of
Cycling as well on a static bike cuz I can do those during the working hours today you know a couple of weeks in two training I’m feeling so much stronger than I did at the very beginning this a huge motivator for the next three months brilliant right let’s go for another run shall
We let me catch you up on me so I’m James I got into running 7 years ago and well I hated running my entire life I absolutely hated it I would actively avoid any sort of physical exercise to the extent that I want to PE teacher I
Was having my period cuz I didn’t know what they were but I got into running because while I was 21 Stone and uh struggling a lot mental healthwise I needed something so in the middle of the night picked up a pair of Bor shoes head
Of that door did 1K is I never had a watch back then and uh it hurt a lot but I loved it I felt something ignite within me it’s kind of spiraled since then 39 marathons now and a fair few Ultras walk the alone and nobody can hear you go m
Are you happy I’ve now got a one and a half-year-old kid who is amazing and uh one of the things my grandmother used to teach me is we’re all stories in the end so when we’re gone we’re kept Alive by the stories people tell of your weird
And wonderful life and uh there’s no story in having not run 100 miles I don’t want to tell my kid that I Shi away from a challenge so here we are are you happy the thing that I have struggled with since having my daughter is actually getting out and
Training sometimes when all I want to do is play with my kid so my fitness is not where I want it to be but I don’t want to be scarting the cut offs like I did in comates one of the key parts that I feel like having a kid has
Prepared me for is the lack of sleep almost 4 hours in so coming up to 2/3 of the way through 2/3 of the way through 50k I just need to keep Trucking now go out and try that trail run because I can promise you absolutely promise you there is
Beautiful things on the other side okay so we are in to the last lap and trying to tap in to the motivation to keep going and this sign perfectly encapsulates that at school I was told I shouldn’t exercise because I was large when I got into running there were so
Many people that told me I couldn’t you know you can’t run a half you can’t run a full you can’t run marathon deser and it is fuel for me and I’m hoping there’s someone out there that is being told oh you can’t run that use that as fuel use it as fuel this
Makes extraordinarily happy to be able to do these things to hopefully share it hopefully to share it with my daughter one day right come on enough waffle I need to drag these very tied legs up this hill then up another couple of hills and then down and then around and until the Finish
Line Come on Barbie let’s get party can’t believe I just said that out loud I can see the Finish Line done and just like that I am done so that is nine laps 29 and a half miles in 5 hours and 51 minutes and that’s just a training run I
Have to run 70 more 70 more miles I’m hoping it’s maybe inspired you to take on something crazy that you maybe been terrified of doing or it’s just got you to share your story down in the comments down below and if you want to watch me in a lot of pain go
And watch me run the igot 101

I especially like the films featuring James because he has accomplished so much, but is so humble and open about just how the different experiences affect him. Good on you, James!
Training for my first 100 as well, coming up this September! Thank you for the inspiration and best of luck!! 😊
Really enjoying watching James’s videos. All the best James. Question for you what will be eating over the 100 miles
I want to see James training for the IRONMAN. He has the necessary building blocks.
"I'm sure you'll run 100 miles
And I'm sure you'll run 100 more"
Great video, my fitness isn't where I want it to be, and like yourself, I've a 2 and half year old little boy who I hate leaving to go for a run but also feel guilty for leaving my other half looking after him while I go out, I'm currently training for endure24 and have the excuse that the dog needs to go out but it doesn't make it any less guilt free, keep it up 👊
Im so looking forward following your journey!
Good luck James! I’m also taking part in the Thames Path Challenge this year – just the 100km as opposed to 100 miles though haha – will be my first one. Good for you on always pushing yourself – inspirational stuff!
I started running just under a year ago and in that time I have managed to go from a 30 minute 5k, to 25 minutes, I am running Manchester marathon and have a self designed 70 mile run from my childhood home to my current home for British Heart Foundation in June. I'm not going out for record times, I'm going to grind out the distances and prove to myself I can do it. Doing it to show that inner child who was sitting inside them all along.
So much that's encouraging in this video, thank you. I've no ambition to run 100 miles, but then I said that about HM when I was still in C25k and achieved that in December thinking that was my limit. But you've got me thinking about a marathon now…
A 100 mile ultra is definitely on my bucket list, right after a sub-4-hour Marathon, and then a 50 miler. Oddly, I think I'm more scared of getting the 100-mile logistics right than having the GRIT to push through the pain to finish. Drop bags, shoe changes (like Nascar tires), headlamps, fueling, blister management, sleep?… oh my.
Thank you for this! I was never known as someone to achieve anything great physically and when I started running, people told me, I couldn't accomplish what I wanted because they simply did not believe I was the type of person for it. They were outright concerned for me. Just like you, it fuels me to prove them wrong, just as much as the voice in my own head saying, I cannot do something. And of course, there are those friends who celebrate the positive effects running has on my mental and physical health and I choose to focus on them.
You're an inspiration!
Good luck james 😊
39 marathons 😨😨 that’s incredible! !!
I’ve never done even 1 😁…although I do exercise and run 20 milers consistently….may eventually do a 50 miler some day (no marathons) and perhaps a 100 to follow it…will see…
I'm so excited to go along for the ride as you train for your first 100 miler! I had big plans this year for many exciting running adventures, but I broke my ankle and now plans are on (temporary) hold. The moral of the story for me is – stop putting things off, assuming you can do them later. The future isn't guaranteed, so do all the fun adventures NOW!!
Im getting ready for my first 50K ultramarathon in Fort Worth TX next Sunday. Thanks for sharing your story!
In order to complete a 100mile race you should be able to run roughly 15h/week for a period of 3 months prior to the race.
Running my first 50k this year
You got this. Hopefully I can run my first 100k this year. One day a small pipe dream. Maybe do 100 mile run.
Inspirational! Good luck with the training
Good luck James! You can do this!
James. You need to come out to the Pacific North West for one of the many ultras here. You would just love it.
Enjoy Your first 100 miles! Or at least try to as long as possible. I'm also awaiting for my first in the beginning of May. In fact, it's a strange format: 24 h race on foot, starting at one point, and ending 24 h later as far as possible from the start point, every participant can choose their on direction and path. Needless to say, there are no aid stations, I'm on my own, relying on shops and gas stations. My plan is to cover about 100 miles within 24 hours. And so far I have also finished some 100 km races. I'm excited, but also a bit scared. Scared of the unknown. I'm rooting for You!
Love watching your progress and being your best self 👏🏼 100miles is epic!! I’m considering 50miles and that’s scary enough! You’ll be amazing! Best of luck with the rest of the training 💪🏻
Great video James, love your positivity and pragmatism 💪🏻😅 100 milers are as much (if not more!) a mental as a physical challenge, as long as your mind is in the game and you believe in yourself you will absolutely smash it 🙌🏻
It's super refreshing to see a dude built like me talking about running 100. I'll get there, thanks for helping me along.
Done it running loops around the lake in Victoria Park Belfast last June.167km
Short answer- you can't.
Excellent video, looking forward to more of your training journey and the event itself. Good luck and take care
Thats such a cute medal 😭😭😭 wishing you all the best for training and achieving your goals ❤❤
James, you are such an inspiration and motivation. Thanks for sharing and look forward to more of your training journey 😀
Damn impressive stats James !! Thanks for so much motivation 🙂
James! You are truly an inspiration! Love your story! Love your journey! I amongst many many others, have no doubt that when you toe the line, you will complete the 100 and do it in amazing fashion! Crush the training and the race is the reward!!!
As a parent I fully understand the difficulty of putting yourself first when it comes to training. My kids are in their 20s and I still feel guilty for spending time on me. It doesn’t get any easier. Good luck bud.
I currently training for The Wall in June.
Good luck James. Great to see you efforts on screen. You have a great stories and your daughter will be proud of all your many achievements. Keep up the great work 👊🏻
“To hopefully share it with my daughter one day.” Hit me in the feels. My daughter is 4 and any time my wife asks if she can run a local race I say, “of course,” because my daughter loves watching and cheering her mama on.
You got this! We believe in you.
inspirational broer, I too started running because I was having mental problems. I have never looked back ever since then. I am going to do more
James, you are an absolute inspiration!
Yay! I’m volunteering at TP100 this year. I’ll be cheering you on for sure
Good luck James, I’m also training for 100 miles right now ( race is June ) where can I follow your progress further?
Wow!! That was a wonderful start to lovely story👏👏keep up the good work 🤗
