Snow-capped peaks, tightly-packed hairpins and silky-smooth roads. Picture-perfect lakes, raging waterfalls and dramatic views as far as the eye can see. Switzerland has it all for road cyclists.
RCUK headed to Switzerland in search of the country’s best cycling roads and we certainly weren’t disappointed. Our journey took us to the cantons of Lucerne, Bern, Valais and Vaud, and each was unique in what it offered to cyclists. The variety of terrain was simply stunning – from rolling countryside in Lucerne and the dramatic Grimselpass in Bern, to the jaw-dropping Furkapass in Valais and a relaxed lakeside ride through Mediterranean-like vineyards in Vaud. With just a day in each location, it really felt like we only scratched the surface of this cycling paradise.

We’re here in Switzerland to find some of the country’s best cycling routes. That’s right. We’re going to ride some of the country’s most cycling friendly regions, or canton’s as they’re known. We’re going to see high mountains, some rolling countryside and some beautiful Swiss
Lakes. And our first day is starting in the city of Lucerne. We’re next to the famous at Kappelbrücke and we’ve got a day of rolling countryside ahead of us. Our ride takes us from the centre of the city that gives name to the region out
To the UNESCO biosphere reserve that offers natural beauty at its finest. The Lucerne region offers some fantastic rolling terrain, sometimes overlooked thanks to the proximity of the Alps. Expect quiet roads and a taste of truly rural Switzerland. What an amazing introduction to Switzerland’s riding today has been.
What we’ve had today is picture-perfect riding conditions and enough to warm the legs as we head into the mountains. As we depart the canton of Lucerne, the road tilts up as we head into the mountains of the Alps. We’re in the canton of Bern,
The second-largest in switzerland ,and our route of choice is in the southeast of the region – the Grimsel pass. Topping out at 2,164 meters, the road from Innertkirchen takes us up through the valley and really feels like a condensed version of Switzerland. Tunnels, reservoirs and switchbacks. Jaw-dropping views around every corner
And road cycling at its finest. We’re here at the top of the Grimsel pass, which marks our departure from Bern and over into Valais, where the road joins seamlessly with the infamous Furka pass. The Furka pass is located in the very east of the region and descends into the
Valley before climbing back out towards the Rhone glaicer. The road offers smooth tarmac, rivers, switchbacks a plenty and views to die for. Here at the top of the Furka pass, you can truly appreciate the scale of Switzerland’s mountains and what a view. And here below us is the Rhone river,
Which runs all the way to Lake Geneva – our final stop in Switzerland. Switzerland is bookended by Lake Constance in the east and Lake Geneva in the west. Geneva is the biggest lake in country and is the perfect spot for a
Bit of rest and relaxation after the testing roads of the Alps. It’s easy to lose oneself in the winding roads through the vineyards that produce the region’s finest wines. What an amazing time we have had in Switzerland.
Absolutely. We’ve ridden some rolling countryside, a couple of high mountain passes and today we’ve finished at the lake. Yeah, you know trying to pick out an absolute top moment from Switzerland is near on impossible – it’s like the country has something to offer every type of cyclist.
Totally. We’ve ridden some incredible roads and I feel like we’ve only scratched the surface. Yeah. I know for sure I’m going to be coming back
