Bachacaglia: The lyrical Bachacaglia takes the cycle in a new direction. This piece is based on Bach’s famous Passacaglia in C minor for organ BWV 582. In the slow Baroque dance of the same name, which is usually in a minor key, a bass line (basso ostinato) serving as the ground for a sequence of variations is repeated as often as desired. Bachacaglia presents the original bass melody with a rhythmic twist, with an upbeat in 3/8 and the theme in 5/4 time. The result is a flowing movement with meditative progressions reminiscent of New Age music and modern pop music.
