This video is the recording of Workshop 1 of the South Australian Defence Hackathon 2024. This workshop was given by Michael Laden, Technical Director of DEGSA, and he gave more information to participants about DEGSA and what the hackathon is going to be about.

The workshop was hosted in the Vintage Boardroom at Lot Fourteen. Huge thanks to the Department of Premier and Cabinet, South Australia for allowing us to use these facilities.

Hey everyone Micha bring them in in a second um it’s the the zoom link is recording teams um so before we actually properly get started Michael run the presentation and talk about a bit about the hackathon what we’re going to do but before all of that because you are all complete

Strangers to me so I would love it if you maybe all just go around and and introduce yourself and what company you work at and maybe talk about a bit about your skill set what you’re interested in as parts of engineering um hi I’m um I

Work for DG um up in this will be my third year there since graduating um I do mainly research and development Engineering in various things um and mainly my skills are bit of mechatronic um I do a lot of mechanical design um a lot of rapid prototyping with CNC

Machining um lots of different 3D printing things um and a little bit of electronics simulation um basically just yeah minim minimizing the time it Tak actually get so I’m so I’m the uh Chief technology officer for stem cell foundation and so we’re also uh sponsoring and helping this hackathon as

Well particularly with um these devices here which uh think show you a little bit later then all right um but uh yeah we do iot artificial intelligence Electronics we’ve been doing engineering since actually Electronics which is the foundation company for stem cell started in 1994 so um we’ve been doing quite a lot

Worldwide since then so yeah and I’ll be I’ll be helping as much as possible as well for bar thanks hi everyone name is Robi um work at the Air Force as a aerospace engineer um been two years since uni graduated unw 2022 um currently doing a bit of compliance uh demonstration engineering um

Design um skill sets uh exposive ordinance um Aerospace and interested in like space debris management and B cycle cool hey guys I’m R so I work at the Air Force as well I’m an electrical engineer supposedly at least yeah so at my work I yeah do some Electronics design mostly like a

Prototype level and same with software so I just uh a bit of embedded systems and some just general purpose I’m Tash I’m a computer systems engineer uh currently working in the Air Force as well with these guys um I’m in a role where I mostly do data engineering it’s some complex ICT

Project roll out um so interested in so learning more about Cloud learning more about data um love anything to do with software and just learning different ways to bring all that together I’m Clarence work engineer also with ref uh working in engineering insurance at the moment so it has G much familiar

With the acronym yeah yeah hello my name is Scott Bailey um I did mechanical engineering and physics at University of Adelaide just graduated finished last year um I at DST right now was on the step for the last two years started full-time as a technologist role so research and

Innovation um did a bit of modeling and simulation of seekers like RF Imaging Seekers and doing a bit more modeling optimization analysis on Rocket Motors air frames stuff hi everyone um my name is Mark I’m from iot Consultants just upstairs uh so we are an AI M company uh my background

Is a systems J mainly mod Bas systems engineering and uh been helping Pon and Michael for the last few months um trying to get this acum going and also from technology perspective trying to sort of encourage the younger Engineers to get into so like digital transformation digital

Digital TN and how IML can actually help um a during decision making um yeah that’s me what uh hi guys I’m Michael Leon B’s best friend uh I’m the co-founder of dexa uh former engineer at B so um used to do stuff with uh the PA so worked on the pa

Uh so integrate integrating the um AR and life support equipment onto the platform so lot of risk assessments inter FL clearances things like that um yeah um so I’m Vision I’m a hardware engineer at Boeing um also started DEA with Michael um um what do I like to do

On I in terms of engineering love the iot space microcontrollers kind of Robotics that’s what I majored in at University um also love software and algorithms and just I don’t know making a complete product and making it work just it’s very satisfying so uh yeah just love to Tinker pretty much yeah

Good day Daniel a mechanical engineer looking at bols unfortunately learn more about a software that’s some things oh um I’m Matt I’m a I got a mechanical engineering degree um but I work as a research engineer at DST and I do a bit of everything like um combat Management Systems um nvsc requirements

Solicitation all of that stuff y amazing um pang’s online as well maybe we can introduce himself someone’s at the door so I’ll just grab that um and we’ll start at 5:45 about five minutes thanks everyone sorry I’ll get started now um I’m just basically talk for a bit and

Then we can teach their work afterwards it’s people in person it’s really teric so thank you everyone this is the first Workshop of four workshops that’ll be in the the act itself um it’s called what to expect at the hackathon uh by me next slide please

What is dexa so this is a brief introduction to dexa those of you do on uh dexa we are um and I started it last year in in May uh we were two graduates at B def Australia and uh we were talking about how fun it would be to create a

University like a club uh for graduates uh defense graduates South Australia so we saw that niche in order to bring cool and exciting events to to everyone so we sort of like a University Club we non for-profit um and we want to just provide great fun engaging activities um

For yeah our overarching mission is to make the def industry the most attractive career Prospect for graduate engineers in South Australia so that’s our that’s our end goal um and we’re going achieve this through three pillars so this is how we do it so we have three different pillars uh this is

In The Graduate development chronology uh starting from when uh the graduate Engineers are young uh to when uh they are older so basically we have on the left here we have the Inspire so that’s my secondary students to your career in engineering so just straight up engineering doesn’t matter what and we

Believe we have capability with a graduate Network to to do something really special in that in that case um we’ve collaborated with stem education organizations oration uh and we’re aing to integrate with the local education curriculum because 88.5% of graduates um in ter education graduate as an engineer

And there’s there’s going be different SCH shortage there second pillar is the attra pillar want to bring Engineers into defense uh from all uh sectors uh so um basically having a presence cross um sector events such as Career Fairs hoping to bring everyone um into defense and finally we’re keep engineers in

Defense uh so how we’re doing that is we’re collaborating with key organizations such as engine Australia to provide recognized professional development opportunities like this one so I’ll talk a little bit later about how Engineers Australia is helping us out here and how they’re making a recognized event uh

But uh these are our uh three directors so we have uh vion vion’s the executive director uh myself technical director andk director y all right so why are we doing a hackathon so the original inspiration for the hackathon um was uh Ben the other another one of he said uh Jim and

He was like that’s um basically the original inspir was uh to support a SL medium Enterprise 14 and about the same time we uh we’re hosting the um we’re hosting the thank and we met Mark and Mark as a company here at La team and we’ll s work

With Mark to figure out how we could create an event um that supports s so the um it’s inspired by m basis enging approach uh that I Consultants does you get more about than a little bit but ultimately we just want to make something fun and memorable for graduates next

Slide right so I’m going to talk a bit about sponsors now this is not the section of YouTube video that you skip because this is very relevant uh to how this uh this whole thing concept out so I’ll talk about other sponsors first so we have Engineers Australia and

Attending four of the workshop plus the hack itself earns six hours of CPD points so that works towards your CH profession engineering stats um Red Bull is providing many cans I just realized I have so many cans you get it’s G be insane so you definitely

Be that one 800 Mig c um then going to defense tral laser and this one is defense they’re all providing funding as well um and then we also have technology sponsor so s AIT into two here uh we have stem cell foundation so Maria is here representing now uh we have leap

Here and then we have iot so and so these three technology SP sort of explain like um how we integrate the uh different Technologies to create the Ultimate Experience if you will so all right so the uh First Technology sponsor that we have here is stem cell Foundation uh who’s going be delivering

A workshop on Friday the 9th of February at 5:30 so this time in this boardroom um did you want to talk briefly about stem Cil Foundation um yeah sure so our background is stem and social Enterprise Learning so actual application stem so we’ done done a lot of Education right through from

Companies through University through even high schools and even even some primary schools actually as well um so D education right through the Cent through the Section but we also um have come up with with lots of patents we’ve done a lot of Rapid development also for companies um sometimes I remember a few

Years ago you know Panasonic rolls in with the television and says that we need to make it so that if uh there’s no people moving in front of it then it’ll turn itself off sort of within whatever time limit it was 5 minutes or something but they

Don’t have they have a remote control but they don’t have any diagrams so we took on the job and five days later R it out okay so we can we can do the rapid rapid development so we’ve been working on rapid development tools and so the Run link which is the

Operating system on the controller is controllers that our own design actually has been sort of in development as a rapid development tool particularly for internet of things and artificial intelligence as well and it is very very much a roll out over five years of design for the operating system

And quite a few years obviously of continuing development on controllers as well particularly for using robotics as well so I’ll be going through that next time but um we uh are very keen to obviously support the I suppose what I’m this maybe take one and pass it around that’s probably the way maybe

Take half the okay um I’ve got information on here basically okay basically there’s a link on there and that will give you a little bit of background the Run link system is on the chin um accessible as a web page okay so I’ll go into that but we also do

Have an online system as well as a web page so you can actually try some of the things even before next week and hopefully you do so that I get some question that’s actually better if you can you can try some things there’s there’s a few projects there for example

The first project is just one line of code to take the camera from your phone and put it onto the web page as well onto the Run link web page run link can create your own control panel um on a web page so it can include iot include include AI um

And go into those details next week okay yeah thank you um yeah so we have m’s presentation coming up next week and basically uh we’ll be providing the uh chips to graduates to use to you guys um do do a demo here I just take demo so what to expect for next

Week so because it’s on a web page on the Wi-Fi chip I’ve actually opened it on my phone and pressed run this one I can cover red aler critical sensor reading from Mira to satellite for immediate action pressure change in high pressure pipe 138 on freit imminent danger alert Personnel for immediate

Action no that’s a message that put in so you can just put in any text and you activate voice for example thank you um co uh up next next technology sponsor is Le uh leap is a uh they Pro they do provision of software to Industry so basically if you want

Some software they’ll provide it you in this case they’re providing us anest Discovery so anest Discovery is a a rapid Pro Tool uh cfd uh so you’ll be able to do cfd and part of the haathon is going to be obviously model basis engineering and we’re going to need res

From to integrate to you know final pictures things like that um so we have uh lots of licenses with this uh as well as space claim I’m not sure if it’s still called space CL basically 3D modeling as well start be good and thirdly we have biot

Consultants so I’ll let Mark brief talk about so this story iot so me business partner background uh they focus on defense and the I shaped around nuclear singes and that’s what we he um my business partner has extensive uh nuclear somewhere in in France also work our general atomics here in ADL and

That’s how I shaped and when we when we came here and we discussed about the issues in the naal industry it realized that in the defense in the in in the in the defense environment especially around the ship buildings there is a lack of um efficiency in in terms of in

Terms of the decision making and it’s because there are a lot of moving Parts in the ship building uh we realize that there is a requirement for a shared platform that actually different parties from the supply chain engineering manufacturing decision makers they can come to a platform and then they can

Actually form an environment that they can actually shape uh uh their the decision- making process and for this hackaton we are actually providing a platform that incorporates your CAD models but then allows you to to attach your documentations into the cat model and then share it with your team and

Potentially manufacturing party to to build the ship and and it’s part of the exercise to actually teach the younger generation about how going from the paper to to the digital environment to for the design process and then sustainment um that’s what for this excellent cool and then in an effort to

Sh on this that diagram I’ve uh I’ve put digital twins simulation software and microl platform together and then the center we have maybe a good engineering approach uh so hopefully through this haathon we can utilize these different uh facilities and through our sponsors to actually create something cool

Um and so to actually upskill each of these three different things we have uh the next three workshops uh the different ones so we got run link chip then we got simulation software Workshop Discovery uh that will be the present will be virtual uh and we have the mbsc uh

Software and those the dat cool about the hackathon format so the way it’s going to run is it’s just quite typically a 24-hour hackathon it’s from the 2nd to the 3rd of March uh do we have a start 9: a. 9:00 a.m. on the 2nd to 9:00 a.m. on the

3D you can leave at any time you will need to to leave us some point to guess on uh but all deliverables which are to be confirmed uh be completed by the end of 24 hours uh testing presentation and the awards be on the F side so you won’t uh

You won’t get like your performance score at the end of the 24 hours you just like close reports and then following Saturday you’ll be producing with things sorry testing um we’ll have manufacturing facilities uh so they’ll be held at a workshop also TBC uh but tooling workspaces will be

Provided so that you can you know work with the phys product uh there will be provision on basic components uh how the specialized Hardware will be procured with provided funds F of some value teams uh do number of registration so we originally did say five uh we

Didn’t get as many registrations as we would have liked uh so we’re going to go for with 14 three so uh get uh information about each of the competitors sort of uh SK match every one so that the teams are roughly um waiting and also actually

Stuff oh our mentors big thank you to the following three uh Scott Scott is one of our mentors um we have Ben Lang he’s not here he’ll be here May six and then as well so big thank you the mentors they’ll be basically roaming around uh during 24 hours helping each

Other individual teams um so what you what will you be actually doing in the agathon you’ll be designing and building a warship so it’s going to be at 1 to 150 scale so it’s going to be approximately 1 M you don’t have to make it exactly

1M um it’s going to have to run multiple tests autonomously so so the tests are still TBC but just think of General both tests and you can probably guess what it’s going be like um the actual details will be in a book at start 24 hours uh points will be

Allocated to each of the teams based qualitative and quantitative factors so that includes like performance digital twen accuracy as well as presentation of engineering considerations so the last two there so digital Jo accuracy we want to see see when you’re developing a system it has to have good uh

Concurrence with the uh simulation so the simulation has to agree and there’s going to be Point deduction based on things being wildly off um as well as presentation of enging considerations so we see do stuff like that that’s presented on the following Saturday to a panle of judges and that will be a

Qualitative assessment what’s the prize well the prize is exclusive tour and parting of the PA where Basra place are included but that’s what it’s thinking about thank you part sign which we hope is more uh any questions question on the manufacturing facility are there any conductions

Required to do the event uh uh so so um they might be and we’ll let you know cuz you’ll be here every Friday catching up um we’re just confirming um which facility that we will get this two that we’re um thinking about depending on there is most most likely there might

Be a very short one but I because you’re not students in your all actually working we have to build an actual or are you giving us a platform to develop digital twin no so it’s it’s the it’s the full designer build of the boat as well as

The digital twin so it’s it’s all of that as much as possible in 24 hours and there will be facilities to build the boat but like I said provisional basic artment so we’re sort of we’re sort of working it out based on how much we can support you guys such

That you’re not just left with the that yes good question uh when and how will the teams be formed uh a great question a great question I’m sure you all are wondering um we want to strive to make sure that the skills that are lock across the teams are as even as

Possible I also still considering um I know that you put in what teams that you wanted to be with your registration um so we shortly after this we’ll send an email out to everyone um either today or early next week um just we with the Google form and it’s just going to be

Able to list kind of what your skill sets are what your interests are and once we get all that we’ll collect all that information together and put this team together that to make sure that there’s a good you know level skill of mechanical design Electronics coding and

Everything so we want to just put we make sure that you’re like your the teams that you want in but the teams were like originally signed be five can’t have five yeah um so yeah we we we’ll keep you up to date but you will receive that email very soon

Yeah is a facility nearby like the manufacturing facility you have look uh there is an actual manufacturer as as the so they actually to build these ships so and the reason for that is that it’s not just shipping competition is is a meing of the real world scenario that

You need to deliver your design to the manufacturer to build it for you so you need to have high level of accuracy so we need c the thing basically correct so so this is not simulation and stuff so you so these ships needs to be functional fully functional and it’s test fully as

Expectation we giv so we giving giving base design so so you’re not you’re not designing everything from scratch okay so you you’re making modifications to the design to make it better know this like sorry you have speak about yeah of course but to to that end it’s not like

Everyone still has full autonomy as to the designment yeah see so so if you want to go brave and you want to reject the base design and then come up with your own design you’re more than welcome the B and happy actually to support you um the facilities that these

Guys are talking about is that there’s another option that we actually trying to get you access to the actual Workshop so you build it you build the components yourself rather than to order it from the supplier as well so and that is still in the process yeah we also we’re very careful

Not to give you too much you know because we we will we’re developing a which you will get access to at the start of the 9:00 a.m. and then develop so um there’s no need to go home and do any res um but but it’s it’s very much doable in

The 24 hours I think we l out in big SC for like correct yeah even if you if you yeah if you don’t develop it a lot you’ll still be able to get something useful um but there’s a lot of room for improvement as well platform to be able

To develop and show your that so I just all interested in what you guys have you like do you do you have like some five machines like like I mean that also could be a possibility it depends on if you can accessib but we are being realistic so

You’re not expect you to these are build the test things within 24 hours from from scratch so love these things unexpecting not to not these chips sync yeah just to give you you know you mention all the platforms of the ship buildings in this country that’s going

And in the west these platforms are happen around for for the last 30 years so we’re not actually inventing a new platform so it’s it’s a difficult task so we’re not expecting you to go and design the entire ship from SC from scratch no it’s not realistic

So so I’m from like the NM start you give us the scenario you know what what’s the V bu for or what kind of just deep water shallow water was like the hold that yeah there’s much as you can give information to there there will be a situation you

Will have the soul yeah um and and the solution to that situation uh may be in the design of the boat but or may be something that you have to think about and uh present to the in your presentation that in in the following so you’ll be presenting to um

A panel of experts uh from the Air Force as well as from um different systems yeah correct um so part of it is the ship design and youring justification of your decisions and part of it is that that wall game that was mentioned part of the P that’s that’s that’s the level that

Going to be presenting this and that presentation they get to do that after that 24-hour period as well the week after yeah that’s right the following Saturday we’ll be testing in the morning then it will be uh do presentation as far as possible and then using the photos videos that you took OB

Your about whether it succeeded or failed and then creating presentation and then presenting it to the judges and then and packed day yes any other questions I’ve got a date for the headon but is there actually a time for this start finish 9 well yes so we we’ll send more details

Uh shortly but yeah 9 9 to9 is the hackathon we’ll probably expect you to arrive at 83 just so get yourself set up and maybe just letting us do an induction um so we can essentially give you the booklets open it and n and it’s

All you um Michael and I myself and Mark I’m sure will be there the whole time um and and yeah any support um the mentals will come throughout the weekend as well um they won’t stay overnight with you unless they really want to just whatever time for the mentors is

Works but yeah will be there and there might be the an gu maybe online yes that’s right like few hours maybe answer Sky be on PTC troubles with the discovery software yeah yeah yes okay so this is going interesting um one one thing that we

Need is so once we get the um group of three going so the four groups of three um put you in um I’ll probably send an email out to see if uh so if one of you can bring I mean I’m sure all of you will bring laptops there’s a lot of

Research to do but um if one of you has a laptop that has a Nvidia graphics card at least Bing some um which is the requirement for the discovery software um so that way we can just um give you the license and you can install it you don’t will provide

Different Hardware but the software to be installed before you yeah yeah just the discovery um and then we’ll give you the license before whatever um but yeah if yeah video graphics card will be if not that’s fine we’ll have what SS we bring in but it just needs to know so we can

Know how much to bring to yeah it’s workbench oh workbench different from an Discovery yeah it’s so it’s an discover is like its own platform uh they sort of it’s interesting they sort of did like uh I never heard of SC before we talked

To to Peter um and he he T us about it and sort like a a lower Fidelity but more user friendly and faster prototyping one so you can sort of like move things around in the cfd simulation we instantly update and so it’s like it’s very quick

G um I’m sure look you less than gigs of bean yeah good work you’ll see if yeah it’s great for like hypothetically you know if you wanted to use this as a justification for a design decision and you wanted to test multiple designs as you see run best as an example whereas

On normal um an it would take you the whole day to do that we was thinking about using like cfd um version like now let go for Discovery it’s going be too slow to you really guessing out fast simp to use to their existing like cfx Inu easier the same

Workflow it’s I think it’s all in one sort of like if you want go back to the image yeah yeah it’s like all in one yeah so like you can’t really read these tabs where it says design facets display measure prepare and simulation so it’s all sort of in one View and this

Cfd will be updated and like the thing it’s really aw to see just has un come to this yeah abely by the way this an Discovery Workshop is actually very going be very very interesting um I have some people that don’t even participating just comeing to see that so genuinely anyone

You know he really interested in cfd and like want to come and see please bring them up we have a big Auditorium as well so we can f 15 there yeah there is put much out I mean probably Shar 20% of the whole competition coming yeah it shows like

He he shows the tap tap like cold scam a hot screen and he shows like changed like the inlet velocity and then like The Temper actually yeah just a t and the vortex and we’ll talk with P yeah see if we can get it for a week

Instead of just the 24 hours so you guys will have the week questions have a yeah have a rrap since youw question uh there’s no one online you are only there’s three other people that are missing um I I know why they’re all missing so they’ll be the next

One is still on can you say hello hello yes sorry I can’t be with you I I had another meeting with Malaysia earlier so greetings to everybody my name is Pang and uh I think it’s very exciting time uh what you guys are doing and uh we’ve been trying to get stem

Going for a long long time just about 30 years this year and I suppose the stem was not even hurt when we started to bring it from America so now it’s in about 15 countries this technology that mro just show you to help to engage kids with uh internet of things and AI

Now so it’s changed a lot from where we started mostly analog at that time and uh the good things is uh Malaysia in Malaysia Intel actually support schools and they were having a lot of difficulties with uh C++ and adrenal and so now they they introduce Runing to

Schools and universities over there and supporting them with the government uh in panang especially our sister State uh to be correct I suppose Adel and Georgetown are sister cities so this uh I think this year is 51st year of uh relationship between adelay and Georgetown and and B is actually the

Silicon Valley of the East they like to so what we want to do is to connect them together with this project and uh so the other countries are Nigeria Cameroon Sudan uh you know you have ban Nepal India United States now and so i e support us is in

America and there’s a lot of case studies now that uh this uh run link will engage the students from very early age from about uh upper Primary School upwards and I suppose the message that we have is can we use this value proposition of a few lines compar 100

Lines of coding to save uh teaching time and lesson planning time time so imagine all the biology chemistry physics teachers in America they say they are not integrated at all and end up with 74% of stem graduates actually quitting so that is a big worry for America they’re spending billions of

Dollars 10 billion US dollars per year on stem education and uh so this inventor uh Dr Lawrence uh who used to be the vice president of AT&T BB uh he had about 500 phds under him to develop highspeed internet and uh he introduced us to uh Google District in

Ohio there we experiened that Chromebook has a lot of issues in terms of uh doing iot projects because uh of this difficulty in installing softwares into Chromebook for a reason that they they want to use Chromebook just for study you know but not connecting to games and so forth but

That is just one issue the other issue is the few hundred lines of coding really uh get them uh seeing what we have it’s a game changer they call it so I think South Australia should be able to Capital I on this uh and and and put ourselves on the

Map uh with this uh I’m brunai close to Malaysia and so 11 countries are there waiting for us to you know use a stem for peace in a way stem for and uh saving the neighboring countries a lot of money as I said in the stem teaching stem lesson planning

Just the two areas alone so I think you guys uh will be able to do a lot in terms help the premium is uh you know they announc 100,000 Chromebook laptops here and getting to the schools so you know give them a helping hand to solve the problem as we discover America

Very difficult to use it for iot uh I I I’m sure miror explain the technicalities of it and uh and so good luck and thank you very much for sharing this experience thank you thank you P thank you thank you by
