Hitler’s Experimental Rotating Casemate

Filmed in France, in the North East Corner of Calais.
Marine Küsten Batterie Waldam or MKB Waldam is regarded by many Atlantikwall experts as a striking example of the technological and intuitive designs of the engineering world firsts created by Nazi Germany at the forced hands of captured slave labour.

The Kriegsmarine placed three 150 mm SchnelladeKanone guns. At first in open emplacements later on two were placed in the M270 regelbau type casemates and one in this unique experimental concrete cupola, the only one in existence. The SchnelladeKanone Drehturm which could pivot 360°

The casemate now stands frozen in time facing the direction the Canadian 3rd army advanced in 1944

The Waldam batterie has a crown jewel, the Drehturm SK gun bunker which could rotate 360 degrees and is the only one in existence.

MKB Waldam is slightly north of Battery Oldenburg and due to the combined firepower it was nicknamed Hellfire Corner.

The unique layout and the lack of large casemates makes waldam a very interesting explore.

Constructed in its present form in late 1942 it housed personnel bunkers, ammunition storages, a kitchen, sanitary building, medical facilities and a fire control bunker on the perimeter.

A garrison with 6 Senior officers, 36 Non Commissioned officers and 200 soldiers manned the busy batterie until capture by the Canadian 3rd Infantry Division as part of Operation Undergo in 1944.

The Regelbau (German for “standard design”) were a series of standardised bunker designs built in large numbers by the Germans in the Siegfried Line (German: Westwall) and the Atlantic Wall as part of their defensive fortifications prior to and during the Second World War.

There were various advantages to a standardised design and they were absorbed into the Organization Todt.

The leader Fritz Todt promised Hitler he would deliver the number of structures he wanted along the easten coast of Europe. This was named the Atlactic Wall.
