Hi all,

Looking for a new bike for commuting. I already have a mountain bike (had in the past single speed, fat and a few gravel bikes). I always loved the single speed feeling , and I would want to have one again for commuting . I want to go for the a simple bike due to the weather factor (I live in Moncton, NB, CA) and the fact that I don’t have a garage to clean it , just a shed . I have a 10-15 km comute 1 way .

I want to spend under/around 1000 cad I have the below options :

1.Moose porter – 589 cad- single speed, they have a local dealer and I can go there if I have any issues

2. LIBERTÉ ALL-TERRAIN-READY SINGLE SPEED BIKE – LBT15 – VOLCANO – 1099 CAD – has drop bars, and belt drivetrain – no local dealer

3. Regal 3 speed volcano – 649 CAD – has 3 speeds , that will help with 2 hills that I have on my route

Opinions ?

Thank you

  1. Ontarian here. I have been told by two indie bike stores to stay away from Regal. I love how the Porter looks though!

Sorry, nothing of value to add otherwise

  2. Nothing to add, just wanted to say that as an American I had never heard of the Liberté All-terrain, but it appears to be a SS gravel rider’s wet dream and the price is legit.

Only hesitation would be the specs say the rear hub spacing is 130mm thru axle. I have never heard of that spacing…130mm qr road hubs are almost entirely non-disc, and standard thru axle road disc hubs are typically 142mm. Also for Gravel specifically, I’d want to know the tire clearance. It’s specced with 35c tires which is a little lean for a lot of gravel riders, but probably ample for any paved road commuting.

Gates belt drive is supposed to be a great choice for low maintenance, and riders seem to like them, but they aren’t very common where I live.

  3. The regal looks pretty great for commuting – the 3 speed hub is great, very importantly it has rack and fender mounts as well.

The Liberte looks lovely, but non-standard parts. and without obvious fender or rack mounts, I would never consider it for a commuter.
