Wow, what a fantatic day it was in Tatabanya. I had been here previously to visit the turul and the cave, but never had I experienced the nitty gritty city before. In just 3 hours we fit in a full adventure in Tatabanya. I’m surprised that nobody comes here, because even on a dismal, cold and dreary january afternoon I had a lot of fun meandering around the city, chating with locals, trying food and making my way around the four parts of town. Watch this video if you like hungarian history, local culture, and an adventure with an american guy who loves doing these little videos. Enjoy and thanks as always. Please subscribe and share with your friends. And I love when you guys leave comments. Thanks 🙂

What’s up, what’s up, how are you? Oh, ameria! very good! I’m american. Michael Jordan. How long have you been learning Hungarian? Five years. I speak terribly, but I try. No I think you speak very well. Good, do you speak english?A little? For example, igen, what does that mean? Yes. Heyyyyy
What does “nem” mean? No. Heyyyyy!!! What does “szia” mean? What’s your name? Me? I’m Willie. On youtube it is @withwillie. Ladies and gents, how we doing? Welcome to tata …….. bánya…… Oh my god. wow. Tatabánya. It’s a market? Yes.
But not today? Today just a little. Would you like to take a look. Yeah sure. Why? What would you like? Or just interested? Yes, just interested. I’m american. Ok come on…. Are you the market master? No. The market master comes tomorrow. Interesting little market. Good. Wow.
What’s your name? Ica. I am Willie. Molli? No. Willie, like Vilmos. I’m American. But my wife is Hungarian. Were you born in Tatabánya? No Slovakia. Oh the Felvidek. Yes.
We can see the turul. the turul a mythical bird of pray with a sword in its Talons the sword that was dropped onto the Hungarian homelands to lead the ancient magyar many centuries ago now we visited
That turul on a previous trip to tatabánya what was it now 2021 3 years ago Happy New Year’s by the way. so we’re going to leave the turul for now and the szelim barlang the szelim cave
Next to it and we are going to head into tatabánya proper a place where I have never wandered and I am titillated titillated with excitement to see what this mining town for that is what bánya means in
Hungarian it means mine to see what this mining town has in store for us well well well if it isn’t Chief arpad the man who led the ancient hungarians into the Carpathian Basin he’s got a beautiful hat and a slightly bent Hilt of his sword surrounded by the seven chieftans huba tas
Ond Kond elöd and I never know is it arpad and the Seven Chieftain or arpad is part of the seven Chiefs because it says on the little Rim there almoss which I thought was arpad’s father born to emese
Conceived in a dream all sorts of mystical stuff somehow the turul involved yada yada yada o farsang! busojaras. all right and now we head onwards into tatabánya into the city into the mine. Can I help you? No, I’m fine. Good, good. You are strong.
Two months (not sure what he said). two months, woo. okay now of course tatabánya well I shouldn’t really say of course but it’s not an active mine anymore it hasn’t been since the 80s when the coal was pretty much exhausted and it
Wasn’t always an active mine either they only dug up the first lump in 1896 the year of the Hungarian millennium there we can see the turul it’s really the symbol of tatabánya my goodness look at these great hunks of Ice. Hotel arpad. turul. szelim barlang. it was between the discovery
Of coal in the 1890s and the closure of the coal mines in 1980s that tatabánya not only came into existence but had a rapid rapid expansion from its prior life as four independent mostly agricultural Villages into the sort of symbol of communist growth and Industry that it did
Become and tatabánya came to symbolize the Communist industrialization projects to such an extent that it was named the county seat the capital of komarom-esztergom county. oh look what we’ve got here a traditional butcher shop what is on offer? Goose leg. Beef. Rooster. okay take a little look wow.
Gorgeous. Oh, unicum? Salami. Oh, Unicum salami. Unicum flavor? Or just the design? Here you can see they take the salami and turn it into an Unicum shape. The lads love it. wow, very good. I adore Unicum. Thank you very much. You are very welcome
Oh its a turul! You see Esztergom, it really represented the old regime in Hungary. it was the seat of the Catholic Church thousands of years of History Petty nobility. yada yada yada. tatabánya on the other hand only became a real city after the four parts alsogalla felsogalla, tatabánya and the
Ancient banhida, which had been a town since 1288, of course of course but they came together after World War II and soon thereafter early 1950s tatabánya becomes the county seat of komarom-esztergom County and it was in the century between the 1890s and the 1980s that tatabánya had thousands
And thousands and thousands of workers move to the area which is why you see so many of these lakotelep these housing Estates filled with the pre-fabricated panel houses the panel hazak wow look at this this is most certainly not a lakotelep we got two santa clauses and uh a school across
The way there all right entering into bahnhida, which I mentioned before is the oldest part of tatabánya, banhida great googly moogly look at the Civil industrial engineering Let Me Tell You Folks it is great to make the acquaintance of another year 2024 it’s going to be a wild one very historical
Year 2024 shall be I promise you that if nothing else but you know what forget about history forget about the news forget about the current events let’s focus on the present for I love nothing more than traversing these common areas you know the the tourist sites they’re great but it’s really
The everyday life that gets me more excited than everything else and anything else for that matter hm, hm, hm, hm. on the path on the road. Here is the sun, here is the sun. It’s not all housing estates. we got a nice looking church over there some colorful buildings
Tatabánya dog. I think he likes me. eclectic. who’s that? of course Mak Bela. no idea who he is oh beautiful and we’ve got the coal. that’s what the workers would say before heading down into the the very dangerous Mine shafts and actually just in tatabánya
Alone in the 100 years of mining history over 500 workers died in mining disasters very tragic very tragic yeah we said that banhida is the oldest part of town and we can see a lot of tradition a lot
Of tradition commemorated here the Slovak house. very nice very cultural is it open not quite the Slovak has nowadays there’s only about 300 Slovak who live in tatabánya but it used to have many slovaks for it was in the 18th century after the expulsion of the Turks that the Eszterhazy family
Who ruled the domains around here particularly in tata that’s where the Tata in tatabánya comes from it’s the more Royal the more fancy Tata just up the road that way anyways the Estherhazys they said it’s post-turk times post-reformation times Counter Reformation times we’re going to bring
A lot of Catholics back into this area slovaks Germans and there you have it oh nice Pushkin oh great guy you know it’s kind of sad nowadays a lot of Russian history is being brushed over
Just cause of Putin but look Alexander puskin he’s a legend any way you call it and that is the and look at this for a bus stop you can see the turul on his hat there tabor farago
Super cool don’t really get a good view behind this pole but uh all right well we see here with these two swords sticking out of the ground some sort of World War II commemoration this lady’s filming from her window and I am filming from the streets this is
A nice looking Memorial 1848 1849 the Hungarian Revolution wow this is like uh the strip of the memorials here in banhida memorial memorial memorial that’s got to be first world war just judging by the uniform yep 1914 to 1918 and it was after 1914 and 1918 that Hungary and tatabánya
Which wasn’t tatabánya yet experienced their first wave of Communism. Bela Kun. 1919 and it was in the counter Revolution afterwards that one of the greatest tragedies in tatabánya history did take place here is the Protestant Church the reformatus templom we know it’s reform
Because instead of a cross they got a star on the roof don’t know whether these are Lutheran or Calvinists but there’s not much oh boy yikes time for a new tire buddy hate to say it but it’s time
For a new tire uh but anyway back to 199 September 6th the Soviet Republic. Bela Kun. The Soviet Republic had been washed out and the counterrevolution took hold they started increasing working hours arresting union leaders and the miners didn’t like this too much you know mining is a very inherently
Unionist socialist industry and so they rebelled guess what they were shot by the gendarmes. they sent in the gendarmes. many miners dead September 6th 1950s the Soviets the Soviet regime they made this the national day of the miners we are now heading away from banhida into tatabánya one of the other three four
Excuse me old villages there was banhida, tatabánya, alsogalla, felsogalla, and what do we have here oh Lead Me little machka tatab machka uhoh he got a little nervous sorry buddy you’re so toy where did he go fast as Lightning I wanted to see housing estates today and instead
Look like we’re in the middle of the countryside we got sheep we got geese we got ducks, jeez this is not where I parked my car hashtag rare and look at this it’s like a full-blown Vineyard wow cement columned Vineyard love to
See it love to see it would love to drink some of their wine. please somebody come greet me and offer me a glass oh well perhaps perhaps we had lingered longer but the sun which is popping
Its head through the clouds is only going to last so long I really love this thank you thank you all so much for motivating me to make these videos it is my dream it is my dream come true
To walk through the streets of tatabánya rambling to myself with a stick in my hand you know everyone’s got a put it on a show for us folks there’s the train steam coming from the pipes little bit ahead of ourselves I don’t want this dream to turn into a nightmare could it be
A sauna all right stay focused stay focused stay Adhd Yep this is what we were looking for a way across the train tracks and I have a feeling on that side of the tracks
That’s what we are talking about baby. numbers on the side of the wall. this is the sarberek housing estate. let’s go have a little poke around a little mosy a little gander. you know what they call a gaggle of geese? they call it a gander. here are the classic
1 2 3 4 five story panel hazak in the lakotelep. and they call them panel hazak because they’re basically panels they’re prefabricated or they were pre-fabricated when they used to make them during the Communist times and they build them in a row and then just stack them on top of each
Other I’m not sure how exactly it works but I’m always fascinated by this type of cement millions of little rocks quite peculiar not so pretty but functional it will probably outlive everything else and I haven’t eaten all day actually just an apple and a banana and a cup of coffee Viva Las
Vegas we got the Vegas Burger it’s actually the Manhattan Burger not the Vegas Burger some cheese some tomato bacon smoked cheese let’s see how it does well here goes nothing not the best not the worst let’s call it a 7.1 oh it’s the biggest river in tatabánya look at
That wow Sunset the gala the gala brook. okay gala gala gala that is the name of alsogalla. and felsogalla. that’s going to be the last stop on our tour today as we Scurry out of tatabánya in the golden
Hour we might not actually have time for felsogalla, or upper Galla but we’ll certainly have time for Alsogalla and actually you know how we said before that the towns the four towns banhida, tatabánya, alsogalla, felsogalla, they United at the end of World War II to become tatabánya
It was alsogalla that held out the longest they were trying to unite since the 1920s and alsogalla was like no we’re richer we’re better we’re growing quicker we don’t want to get dragged down by the others so let’s go see why alsogalla is so compared to the rest and if
It still is today I mean this might have just been in the 40s wow all right we’re inside a this is suspicious okay I’m not sure quite what this is used for. but wow what a view what a
Okay it’s a whole world back here we got the bakery, the icecream store, probably more of a summer thing, grocery store, pharmacy fruit and veg. everything you need very compact all together Community style could have a little bit
Of a second meal in the that that burger sitting on me like Santa Claus at the mall ah kodaly zoltan very famous musician and here is his Elementary School one of the most famous hungarian musicians. Let the music be for everyone
So when you live in a lakotelep. up there’s obviously no garages and if you have a car you store it in somewhere like this it’s almost the equivalent of a old horse stable and this neighborhood on the way to alsogalla and the
Old town is filled with quite big houses actually this is like where the Richie Richies live in tatabánya we’re going to head down here to the galla brook. aha some pipelines now even though the mines closed in 1987 industry still plays a big role in the tatabánya economy they converted
To more manufacturing rather than Mining and to this day there’s still a lot of factories around this neck of the woods just look at the mighty Galla it’s pretty clear actually that water looks damn near drinkable although I do not recommend that I do not recommend that
One bit well we shall wave goodbye to the main chunk of tatabánya out there and head in through this little Nook over there for the Oldtown and Alsogalla the sunlight is draining away rapidly the problem with these winter episodes they’re over before you knew it I mean we only
Got here 2 and 1/ half hours ago fit a lot in to that time don’t get me wrong fit a lot into that time but it goes too quick lovely it’s a kindergarten a Hungarian German Elementary School we can see the May pole May 1st classic tradition traditional clothes and right
Through the buildings there a church poking up proudly through the clouds love the looks of this place Oh american. Very good. I’m American. Michael Jordan. And how are you guys? Everything ok? How long have you been learning Hungarian? Five years. I speak terribly, but I try.
No, you actually speak quite well. Good. Do you speak English? Just a little maybe? What does it mean igen. Yes. What does it mean, nem. No. What does Szia mean? What’s your name? Me? I am Willie. What time is it?
I think it’s four. What’s your name? Horvath Ricardo. Excuse me? Horvath Ricardo. Horvath Ricardo. Horvath Ricky. And? Horvath Marcelo. And? Cristiano Ronaldo. Hahaha. Horvath Mate. Oh so you are brothers? I am also one of three brothers. You play football. Yes, I do actually. Liverpool is my favorite.
Szoboszlai. One more time!! okay cool kids they were headed to felsogalla we’re not going to have time for that today. tatabánya. We’ll be back. wow what a day it’s been here in tatabánya. That’s All She Wrote folks we’re going
To get the train back from the alsogalla train station and scadaddle back home to Leányfalu.

Ha már csináltál 1 remek videót Tatabányaról, talán legközelebb lehetne valami Novo Sibisk vagy Szevasztopol … 😁
The Hungarian "reformatus" (reformed) church is Calvinist, not Lutheran. "Protestant" is a collective term for he many denominations that eventually emerged from Martin Luther's doctrine of basing faith only on the Bible.
Tatabánya the city where i born and living 25 years.
1992.12.29.
I living now in Budapest but every mounth i go home. ❤😊
My hometown. It looks like time has been stopped working there around '95. It is sad to see… but even tough, great video, thanx a lot! :)))
Tatabána at the winter can be really depressed, but during the summer its really beautiful, everything is crazy green there and the nature is incredibly rich, and the city is also very good looking 🙂
Dude! Respect from Sweden! I am hungarian and i would say you speaking very well our language!
Willie világa Tatabányán! Határozottan jól sikerült a videó! Kár, hogy megálltál a nagy kéménynél! Ha legközelebb jössz, akkor itt folytasd, mert ezután van a város legszebb része-Tatabánya-óváros-Május 1. Park, Liget a tóval, Népház, Cifra Palota! Ezenkívül teljesen kimaradt még Felsőgalla, Kertváros, Síkvölgy-külterület, Újváros régi másik fele, a Vértes Centertől lefelé, Alsógalla centruma-Táncsics u.! Ezek mellett a Turul madár, a Szelim barlang, a Kilátó meglátogatását is belevehetnéd!
Lejárod itt is a lábad 😂😂
Just a friendly reminder for the fellow tatabànyai citizen.Don't go to the Mésztelep with alone. This is our Harlam
Have you been to Tata?
Vízbányába kellett volna lemenned, azt érdemes bemutatni
nice video, I like it!
Great video! I was born and bred in Tatabánya – Sárberek coming from a mining family! I haven't been there for 14 years, and those places you visited bring back wonderful memories. I would've loved to see the Football Stadium too in this video. Maybe next time! Hajrá Bányász.
Amazing bro, I was born in Tatabnya, ( Sarberek Lakotelep) love your video. Living in NYC right now
Imádtuk a videót, köszönjük szépen. És köszönjük, hogy megragadtad a város szép oldalát. Ezt mi már sokan nem látjuk, akik itt élünk. Várunk vissza!
I was born in Tatabanya. It’s never been a nice city. Now it looks like Chernobyl
Köszönöm ezt a videót neked, hogy a szülő városomról ilyenek mondtál ❤
Gratulálok, nagyon jó videó.
Külön tiszteletet érdemel ahogy az ország és a város történelméről beszélsz. 👍
A few years ago I would say come here when it's Bányásznap- an annual event- there are music and other programs for that and you could buy many vásárfiát- in the city but in the last few years it's just isn't what it used to be. If you would visit it come when the school starts (first weekend of September) and the Május 1. park is close to Alsógalla trainstop (there's a church in the park too).
Szia 😊Megosztom a videódat tatabányai csoportban ❗🤗
Respect ❤
Greetings from the neighboring city! I would recommend to you to give it a visit as well! (I would say that miss some parts of the city, but since you survived Tatabánya I think you have nothing to worry about!)
Entertaining video my friend, next time you should visit Győr. It's a beautiful city with bunch of history.
Amazing content, I really like your accent, enthusiasm, and desire to acquire the Hungarian language, which is admittedly not frequent among foreigners (a prominent example of that might be the head coach of the national team, Marco Rossi, who barely has any words in our language).
Your Hungarian is impressive and no one's going to stone you but maybe you should try practicing speaking in the formal you (basically 3rd person with the pronoun ön) with the elderly.
And no Árpád is not part of the seven chiefs, his father Álmos was
Did you know, Tata is also means Grandfather?
Busho – Walking are goes back in time when local people and communities made Turkish to go away / fled thus saving The Kingdom Of Hungary. That is a memorial or memorial day.
Welcome to Tatabánya!
I think you would really like my hometown, which is called Várpalota. I would be very happy to see it on your channel! The largest mountain range in Hungary is the Bakony and of course the beautiful castle, with many other attractions! Thanks Willie for the really interesting content you share! Take care of yourself!
It's really intresting bc i live in Tatabánya and almost every place i have a story
At 2:41 in the right you can see a Toyota Corolla E12, but its not just a basic Corolla, it was Toyota's answer to the Civic Type R, with the 1.8L Naturally aspirated VVLT-I engine it makes 192hp and 180 nm, coolest sleeper in that era. In fact they named it TS Corolla.
Dear Willie, thankyou for making my car famous on the internet, next time you come hit me up and ill give you a Joyride (also we can street race at night haha)
Nagyon jó volt látni ezt a videót 🙂 köszönöm szépen
Remelem mikor itt jársz újra tudatod velünk és találkozunk
It was great to see this video 🙂 thank you very much I hope you let us know when you're here again and we'll see
Yay!! I love when folks travel to non tourist areas, were you get usually lol good experiences:))
Álmos, Előd,Ond, Kond, Huba, Tas, Töhötöm. 7.
Actually, the Turul was the one who visited Emese in her dream, and impregnated her! ☺️
Make a long story short, the average Hungarian is 0.08% mythical bird of prey.
Holy crap, you conjugate well! Hats off to you bro
Great vid! Now anybody can see Hungary's real side. Dark, depressive, cheap. Nice work after those Budapest videos, where you can watch only the inner city, expensive shops and the richer people.
Dear Willie!
It’s really cool that you go outside from Budapest and visit other Hungarian places, cities.
I live near Tatabánya and I’ve been so disappointed that almost no one had been recognizing the beauties of the city.
I’m really happy that you visited Tatabánya, viewed its attractions and looked after its history.
If you came nearby once again, I would definitely recommend you to visit Tata, Komárom, Esztergom too. They are beautiful towns with lots of attractions and interesting histories as well.
I can’t wait for your next video!
Take care, Vigyázz magadra! 😀
Kevin
(P.S:
The seven leaders were called Álmos, Előd, Ond, Kond, Tas, Huba and Töhötöm.
They made “blood contract” by injuring their own hands and drinking some of each other’s blood to swear that they will be inseparable.
Árpád was the son of Álmos who led ancient Hungarians to the Carpathian Basin (as you said correctly in your video).
)
Thanks for showing my boyfirend in his natural habitat (butcher shop). xD
arpad not 'part' of the seven chieftans. he a later generation. (you had it right, almos's son was arpad)
Sometimes I feel like you know more about us than we do about ourselves:)… You are really amazing:)
fyi while BUÉK is written the way I just did, when saying it you add a J in the middle (BUJÉK) to help with pronounciation 🙂
Jól nyomod köszönöm . Ha megtanultad ezt az értékes nyelvet kívánom neked József Attilától Eszmélet . Remélem megérted akkor egy új születést fogsz tapasztalni . Még egyszer köszönöm )
you did NOT show any tourist attraction to convince me to travel to Tatabánya. And what's awesome in this is that your presentation made me seriously consider to move to there instead. I love how positive approach made every low key depressive part (except Bánhida) look like a fine place to live amazes me, good job there. See ya on Tatabánya perhaps?
edit: you are totally right, those panels will outlive anyone. And to go to places without any meals for most of the day is the authentic way to experience most of the hungarian countryside
edit2: did you just walk into a random house?!
Great video! And on next week I`m going to Tatabanya. Jo szerencset, Willie and have a nice journey where ever you go.
Love your content and enthusiasm. Keep it up and buék!
Nice! BTW, if you're interested in Székesfehérvár, i can show you around. 😀
The top doors on the panelházak are usually open, so you can go to the roof, in case of a fire, there is an excape route to the other staircases.
The insulated pipes are most likely távfűtés, they bring hot steam to the blocks for heating and hot water. In Székesfehérvár, they make an open day every year in the factory with the boilers where they make the steam, probably in other cities too, keep an eye open, they are pretty interesting.
Én is szeretnék egy ilyen intelligens, magyarul jól tudó,a történelmünk iránt érdeklődő,jóképű amerikai férjet!
Hi Are You gonna visit Harkány? Love your videos, every time I watch them, feel like I am at home again, greetings from UK
