Hold straight I’m far at 500 did you mess with that going [Applause] hot hit it perfect right just hold straight up right little welcome to Chris parking Shooting Sports this is the Savage impulse Mountain Hunter and I’m over here in Colorado in the USA reviewing this rifle

Now this is a very different review project for me because normally rifles are sent to me and I you know get to set them use them in my own rifle range and play about with them take them apart photograph them do all those things but actually on this trip well it’s a much

More complicated story I started off flying into Boston and then going up into Springfield Massachusetts where the Savage Factory is I built one of these rifles myself in the factory and as well as watching the other processes involved which will be probably appearing in another video now the interesting point

Was that rifle is now here with me in Colorado and I’m going to be on a pronghorn antelope hunt with it so hopefully we’re going to cover the details a little bit more after and see if I’ve been successful with that but just to start out this is the new 7 PRC

Cartridge from Hornady so that is equivalent it’s actually slightly larger than some people may be familiar with something like a 7mm Remington Magnum well this is the latest cartridge development from Hornady which makes the most of their very high BC high efficiency Elm elx bullets and also the

CX copper bullets as well uses the most modern super performance propellants so you’re getting great performance from it with a shorter cartridge that will still magazine feed and fit most appropriately in most barreled actions it’s getting Popular woo 700 got 12 you want should do it yeah somebody um watch it for me yeah let me give me a second I’ll get right behind you and then see if I [Applause] can now the key feature with this new Savage as well as the cartridge is the

Impulse action now this is a straight pull action so just to demonstrate that close the bolt like that and Fire now if I fire that off click the bolt will now just cycle straight backwards and forwards if I don’t fire it off I press the button on the back and the bolt

Handle will pull back bolt comes with it separately it has a detachable three round magazine system this is steel magazine push those straight into the top you don’t have to feed them from the front and with that in the rifle we get smooth feeding into the chamber the

Receiver itself is aluminium and it clamps the Barrel in position you can actually have switch Barrel capability from this rifle the rifle is seated into the synthetic stock and it has an aluminium bedding block as well so you get reliable retention with the axan screws the barrels are proof researched

Carbon fiber WRA stainless steel and I have to say I reviewed another Savage rifle recently with the same Barrel on it and it was superbly thermally stable I’m not always the most confident person in carbon fiber barrels but two out of two samples I’ve had from proof research

Both of them haven’t just please me they’ve thoroughly impressed me and this one is no different I’ll tell you a little bit more about at the end it’s 22 in long and we’ve got a 5/8 muzzle thread at this front when it comes fitter with the brakes you can put a

Moderator on which will appeal more to the UK Market it is available in a wide variety of calibers and I’ll put the full description in the details below the barrel is fully floated in the stock the stock is stiff and you’ve got sling studs front and rear for the carrying or

A bipod or anything like that you’ll notice at the moment I’ve been using it in a tripod clamp this is what we’ve been hunting with in America and with it clamped tightly in I can clamp it without any kind of intermittent Barrel contact going on or damaging my zero point of impact nice

I’m ify when the other guy have a good shot on paper this rifle has actually shot sub half inch groups with 17 5 grain ELD X bullet we’ve been using for this hunting trip I’ve got a loophole v86 HD scope mount on Top This is a 3

To18 by 44 so quite compact good for longrange daylight hunting in the US cuz it’s got the CDs function on the top so you can dial for arrange it quickly and very consistently as well the rifle’s got an integral 20a pitini rail so scope mounting is super simple this bolt

Handle can actually be swapped to the left side so the rifle can become left-handed and the stock itself is extras too The Savage ACU trigger is adjustable from 1 and 1/2 to4 and it’s got the internal safety blade on it I treat these pretty much the same as I

Would treat a two-stage trigger because you take up that first pressure effectively and then click off the rifle goes it’s crisp and it is adjustable and I’ve had no problems using it at all and it does give you that extra safety mechanism within it that across the US hunting culture does

Appreciate if I just recot the action there there is on top a two position safety catch forward for fire rear for safe and it’s on the tank here so again that’s ambid dextrous either left or right-handed Savage’s AI stocks are stiff and they don’t actually exhibit any unwanted harmonics from getting

Tapped or bumped the cheek piece on top and the spaces for the recoil pad it’s actually supplied with a packet of various other sizes and thicknesses so you can adjust length of P to exactly how you need it and you can also build up the cheek piece height with the

Taller cheek pieces on it this makes the rifle suitable for all sorts of different shapes and sizes of people shooting it and it’s extremely comfortable in use because that recoil pad is quite absorbent and this year is developing over 3,300 foot pounds of energy so there’s quite a lot of recoil

In a rifle it’s only just over 7 lb a muzzle brake is supplied which cuts a lot of The Recoil and it’s also not aggressively noisy the brake as well I’ve not had too much discomfort shooting it with just my regular air Defenders on but in terms of maintaining

Point of aim through the shot cycle it has been impressive the barrel is fully floated in the stock and there’s plenty of grip textured checkering which is inlaid here to make sure you’ve got a good hold on the gun there’s inlay checkering at the grip

As well it’s a fairly open radius on it but it is ambidextrous and you don’t have any problem shooting it left-handed if you need to in an emergency and of course the bolt handle can be swapped to the other side does anybody want to spot 1,000 M please which one is th000

M okay uh I I can do it with my rifle but not I don’t have a spotter here oh put it right behind you see TR I think I actually hit it with the first round I think what it all comes down to is how accurate is the gun well it is

Sub half MOA accurate I’m very happy with that what matters even more to me though is how consistent this Barrel has been I won’t be shy and say I have got it unnecessarily aggressively somewhat brutally hot purely because I wanted in a short space of time to make it fail me

And it didn’t I’ve shot it on the Range on steel gongs from 100 out to 1,000 yards hopefully that will all come out on the video and you’ll be able to see some of that footage as well as the hunting footage on the pronon antelope and some prairie dogs as well what was

Critically important was that a, yards the rifle barrel had probably 30 35 rounds through it and it was still hit a 12in Gong now there were no other extraneous difficult environmental factors in taking part in that it wasn’t raining it wasn’t too windy but importantly that 12-in gong at 1,000

Yards was not safe I think it’s easy to say as well that every gong of the same size up to that distance was a guaranteed hit out to 800 yards I did miss a few at a thousand but you know even the smallest wind variation at that

Range is going to take you off the edge so you can load the magazine in the more usual way for how you’d expect with a single column magazine sort of pushing them in from the front but actually this one is quite smart because you can just

Push them in from the top like that and it means you’ve got three rounds in there one in the chamber three plus one capacity and that also means that with the magazine in the gun you can just pop them down through the ejection port and load them like that through the

Top one thing to remember about this action is you can load it slowly and quietly now if I don’t fire that action I would need to press the button on the back to open it again but with the action fired the bolt is now free to recycle fresh ammunition here you can

See the two position safety catch in operation rear locks the rifle forward is fire the Acy triggers are now adjustable without having to take the rifle to action out of the stock the bolt release catch is on the left side of the action here so if I

Pull that bolt back back and push that down the bolt will just slide out and you can see the mechanism for how it locks as well as the ACU trigger on the underside and the two position safety here you’ve also got a firing pin that cannot project through the bolt face

Without the action being perfectly closed there is a shoulder on the firing pin to make sure it cannot go through the firing pin hole this makes it superbly safe and of course it’s drop safe because of the Savage AI trigger design now the straight pull action locks in a different way because it’s

Got these six ball bearings which project outwards you can see them moving under Gravity at the moment and they lock into the barrel extension so although the action is aluminium it’s not pressure bearing but the barrel is and like any Barrel extension action it does make it far more easy to swap

Barrels the bolt heads are interchangeable and if you decock it and push this button in here you can remove those and swap them for different Siz cartridge heads this has got the large 532 in style magnum head which will be the same as a 300 Winchester magnum for

Example but of course that’s a beled round and this is not a belted case you can look at the case here that would fit in there like that and there we go there’s a single extractor Claw on the push feed bolt face and the ejector on the underside is mechanical and

Controlled by the speed at which you cycle the action so if you’re very aggressive with the action it’ll fling fling the brass far and wide if you’re gentle it will just pop it out of the ejection port and you’ll see on some of my videos where I didn’t want to lose

Brass I’ve done that just so I can take it out with my fingertips given the popularity of tripod sticks these days and the fact we use them here in Colorado it’s very important that stocks don’t compress and affect Barrel harmonics I like the fact the Savage stock can be tensioned in position

Without any questionable point of impact shift the proof research barrels are beautifully made the internal stainless steel core is single point foot rifled and it’s then lapped for a perfect finish the carbon fiber has been very tightly wrapped under extreme quality control to make sure that the thermal expansion coefficients of both the

Dissimilar carbon and steel work in conjunction to ensure you’ve got the thermal stability I have proved to myself on Target and I have to say yet again this is a thoroughly well-made Barrel that I have no doubts in using going to carbon fiber instead of a full

Steel barrel on this profile at 22 in Long saves 2 pounds in weight so for a rifle that’s about 7.3 pounds in carry weight it does make it a true Mountain hunting rifle and not just a rifle that wants to use that name the rifle is supplied with the muzzle brake but if

Remov it’s got a 5/8 x 24 thread underneath and you could put a sound moderator on that using a carbon fiber barrel with a polymer stock has made sure the balance of the rifle stays Central if you go to just a carbon fiber stock with a steel barrel it generally

Gives you a very front heavy rifle which is not ideal for shooting I remember quite Fally I put the rifle back in the truck with me when we set off back to camp and it was still hot when we got back to Camp half an hour later so

Apologies to Savage I did get it brutally hot but there’s to you viewers I don’t always get the chance to shoot that much ammunition and get a treat gun so aggressively and I am thrilled at just how well it did and it proof research barrels to me have proved themselves to picky parking

I help for wind and I don’t I guess I don’t need to hey yeah left out there [Applause] for I think they might have shot it not sure yeah I was giv a little bit of wind cuz it’s almost full value but I don’t need to byebye [Applause]

There’s one standing up on the edge of the [Applause] lake nice there’s there’s a couple more down there yeah [Applause] okay nice shot oh you definitely hit him got him you got him nice overall length is 44.7 in or 1136 mm overall weight 7.3 lb or 3.3 kg although this does very slightly

Depending on which caliber you choose from due to barrel length and obviously the internal Bard diameter of the barrel which is effectively still there or still not there the rifle is available in 308 6.5 creedmore 300 Win short magnum 6.5 PRC 270 Winchester 306 Springfield 28 Nosler 7 mm Rem Mag 300

Wi mag or 7 mm PRC like the one you see here most 7 mm rifles have a 1 in9 in twist rate but but this proof research Barrel has a 1 in8 in twist rate which horned did believe Optimum for their new generation of elx and Elm bullets as

Well as the copper X copper alloy bullets which are great for non-toxic hunting requirements the 7mm cartridge has certainly proved itself very capable to me and my pronghorn antelope was taken with a single shot at 200 yards I did have longer shot capabilities offered to me but I don’t see the point

In taking unnecessary risks and when there was one available at 200 I thought that’s a safer bet and a clean neck shot took it out we ate it it was delicious one of the nicest things I have ever eaten shooting the pro dogs was something I’ve waited for for over a

Decade and it was as good as expected although this rifle is significantly overpowered for proog shooting what impressed me was the fact I could still spot my impacts and misses through the scope because the recoil was not significantly upsetting the firing position and I was able to quickly

Reload recycle the action and fire again without missing any shot opportunities because although this cartridg is incredibly stable in the wind those prairie dogs don’t start moving very often well I hope You’ enjoyed that review please like subscribe comment and click the notification Bell to make sure

You keep track of my regular uploads I want to say a big thank you to Savage Hornady and also loople optics for this trip to America and the ability to use this rifle for both longrange hunting varint shooting and hunting on the prong horn antelope
