European Union invited me to visit Brussels. So I was in Belgium. Now a really wanted to see a local cyclocross race, but that wasn’t on the agenda.

It was my first time in Brussels and I made some observations about the cycling culture. I noticed that locals used bikes for commuting even if the weather was not so great.

Here is a commuting culture comparison between Brussels and Finland.

Streets in Brussels are narrow and there’s a lot of traffic. Still cars and bikes ride along the same lanes in a harmony and everything just works without any aggressive behaviour. We have a lot to learn about this in Finland.

Most of the cyclist use front and rear lights. Reflective vests are also popular. In Finland we have less daylight available this time of the year. Another thing we need to improve in Finland.

What about pedestrians? All the cars and also bikes stopped in front of the crosswalk if I wanted to cross the street. In Finland…

The results of this comparison are getting pretty clear. I think I can leave it at these three major issues. All in all the cycling culture for commuting seems to be ahead of Finland.

What kind of bikes the locals ride? I saw many foldable bikes. There were also some cargo bikes and few electric bikes. Then there were many road bikes. Some bikers were on a ride, but many people used road bikes also for commuting.

It will be interesting to see if we will see a wider variety of bikes in Finland now that electric bikes are getting more popular. At least I could imagine that especially cargo bikes could become much more attractive with electric assist.
