This week we went out to the Yorkshire dales to check out some routes suitable for 4×4 and AWD vans when the weather gets worse and we can get some ice and snow action.

No what are you saying so those of you that have done Overland that kind of thing all know it’s an endless Pursuit for the perfect spot and it might be the first spot that you’ve seen but you have to in the back of your head check out five more spots and go

Back imagine a weird out light but P seems to be doing same and all we’re just going to check out so this spot was quite a bit out the way but it’s one that I’ve wanted to take off the list for a while and it was just a unanimous yes on a Friday Night just been up to the uh F Mouse to pay and um I’m not quite sure how in depth the uh background screening and things like that are because he didn’t have time to take the six quid uh so he’s giving us very specific directions of

Where we can stop and how much the uh the Water might come in if it rains and things like that so very interesting uh fell we’ll put it that way uh he reckons he’s can come about 10:00 tonight so probably uh just have a NB at what we’re

Doing really um I suppose it’s he doesn’t want people making a mess and all the rest of it but it did tickle me the way he was like no messes no fires no noise and all the rest of it and just like half taken to bits tractors and

Dead vehicles from 10 years ago scattered all over the place but hey it’d be boring if everyone was the same it’s dressed like Mo’s murderer [Laughter] he so we’re parked up he being passed hasn’t complained about where we’ve parked however I feel we need a good

Half an hour 40 minutes in this location to make sure we’re not going to get kicked off for being uneven or too rowdy having too much suspension LIF on our f for this oh this is so much more room just for having a swivel feet I need to get

Drivve in just to get a few lanes whereas you’ve got this literally an hour and a half 2 hours Northwest and it’s not hard to get to A1 straight up and across it’s a beautiful beautiful place so what we’re doing is we’re going to do a bit of a

Reconnaissance around all the lanes to make sure that they’re wide enough and suitable for one when it get snow and ice I want to come back up here and get a bit of a camp out in the bad weather and two there’s a couple of people um

Then just see where we we start we we’ve already dropped in quite a few spots where there’s phone signal nice and sheltered uh few good spots and we’re just going to keep doing it keep having little spots and yeah stop waffling let’s go get some cheese yep get some cheese smell my

Cheese and this is where I really love the van done a little bit of lining it doesn’t float as well as the land but now we get on the road wind up podcast on heat us on and just stick it on cruise control at 50 or something and we’re away This is the hour the darkest Place Dante’s Inferno the de M it’s a good World good world I so there we go cheese in hand every single sample eaten twice over so we don’t really need dinner after that do we so yeah we’re going to get back on the road and we got about 40 minutes till we get to the next line um just we

Producing this is easy easy easy one these are from Aldi you can do it with mro pizzas everything little pizza I put AIT extra toppings on the stuff but the trick is cooking it really slow and what I like to do is once it’s cooked on the

Bottom for a bit rotate the pan round and put it onto the lid so then the bottom becomes the lid and Cooks it from the top that way you get a nice even heat on top as well I just split mine upside down cuz I’m a it won’t be a rid monkey

Where keepers are going to be mooching about out but so we’ Fallen back to the usual house deing Gorge um basically um we’re going to wreck you this cuz we’re looking at having a sprinter meet up here so it’s a nice Spot Cafe activities usual stuff so it’s worth

Seeing what it’s like now cuz it’s changed hand since last time I came here that’s more than enough dry space isn’t it if you just want to move your van to it’s position next to it This is what happens when I try and start fire when Rich is around he’s just undone all my good work and P A little put made a little feather sticks and yeah you didn’t do it wrong you’re just used to doing it with a lot more lighter fluid

And no I do that with paper that that’s the thing though you can do it with a blowtorch a lighter fluid and it’s done and you’re cooking I’m used to going to the woods and that being my entertainment for an hour that’s the I think that’s the difference isn’t

It yeah I’m I’m used to Li this at home and then uh or the the log burner yeah I just again the wood burner at home I’ll do that with a Ferro rod and yeah yeah all the basic just cuz it’s better than watching telly isn’t it that is

True and it it don’t hurt to practice a little bit with these little skills cuz you’re not I mean I’ve done it before where we’ve run out of lighter blocks and stuff so I’ve just gone really basic and it like This It’s not I Still A bit of water to shake that up and get last but Yeah let’s put the rice in the microwave they’re going to know about this tomorrow aren they going know about it so there we go shower changed lovely shower block lovely warm showers can’t knock it start for the day let’s go get a brew at the cafe and uh get the Vans off the

Field I need to get some poer pins for these that’s that’s quite good though because it means it can’t be nicked instantly that is true and actually when you’re doing a lot of Summer overlanding stuff you don’t really use them very often no I’ve I’ve had some on a Land

Rover and I’ve never used them I used them three times for self-leveling that’s all I used them for just leveling the van up you need that extra bit and if you didn’t have them guaranteed you would need them and you’d be pissing so what he’s doing he’s being super nice

And super cautious I said full lock on and just peel round but he’s probably right that if it did start to slip he’s in the wall so what he’s going to do he’s putting recovery boards under his back tires it can re reverse up this tiniest slope on Earth just enough that

He can get a good lock on and go out where I came in yeah because you’re so before we disappear I’ve got this little Hidden Gem that I’m going to show Pee there More So now we’re at the far end can have a quick look here head back move the Vans get a coffee and for them that don’t know it’s the same as in snow you don’t just set off from where you started you rock yourself out of your divot that you’ve dug down

Get out of that and then make an attempt with momentum don’t try and set off from already in a Hole So that’s another stop ticked off the list cuz although we’re planning this for when it’s snowing and that there is always um we’re looking at doing like a group meet so like a bit of a Green Lane thing we know we’ve got a point where we

Can go to where the showers toilets and whatever we need basically this Lane itself is an absolute doal it’s quite flat no real obstacles I’m still in two wheel drive but the idea is because they get quite a bit of snow ice and it’s it’s exposed when the weather’s

Really really bad it should make a nice day out and because you can see overall the mops and Stu it’s so scenic isn’t it cuz we don’t get much bad weather in the UK it’s just like kind of mediocre all the time so I think this will be a nice little Spot so we’re just coming along the top of the mallos now and if I remember right L we’re go a little bit further and then we’re going to have the um quite steep switch back down to the reservoir and we’re going to get a brew cuz I a’t had enough caffeine this

Morning I’d love to get the Drone up but it keeps pissing it down and uh I’ve already lost uh I’ve already lost one drone this year to uh go in in a like and YouTube’s expensive enough without buying multiple DRS a year I’m got to say though it’s crappers it is for

Are allowed then get upset when they see vehicles I don’t I don’t understand it it’s just it’s ridiculous and if you go by there their rules they’ll want the vehicles off of it they’ll restrict access to foot path and then they’ll get rid of horses and mountain bikes cuz they don’t

Like them either and then it gets to the point where it’s just them and they able-bodied mates or or their limited thing but then they forget that it wasn’t so long ago where there wasn’t foot paths and there wasn’t national parks and there was big process to get

Them and they’re the kind of people that use it the most that want rid of it all and the roads will just decline into and out yeah you seen it already in lanes they’ve shut you can’t get the lanes anymore yeah you can’t walk them they’re

Overgrown as as DFT as it is it’s the vehicle traffic that keeps them nice and wide and all the rest of it and I don’t care what people say about 4 before erosion the 4 before associations and stuff do maintenance as well as the council does maintenance and it costs

Nowhere near and it’s nowhere near the damage that Walkers do have you seen the state of the 4×4 erosion on snowdonia all those 4x4s going up the top of Snowdon they on a right Trail in it look at M to yeah I I was up on the Peaks and

I was literally watching watching helicopters taking Stone up to like fix the erosion that walkers have done are you telling me that’s good for the environment he’s running helicopters all day every day to get hundreds of stone hundreds of tons of stone up there now

They need to poke in the eye of these people because they just don’t get it and if they fall over and break a hip the gets and there’s no air ambulance available guess which muet going to be bringing them down in the back of the

Van you know you pull over you start you smile you wave and they just blanky and car walking there’s no need for that at least be polite yeah you know imagine if we had the same attitude with them that they have with us oh yeah well it’s can’t do that though let’s

A Land Rover not think twice about it but I’m not aiming the route at that kind of person it’s going to be the all-wheel drive van crew so it’s just something a bit different cuz I know there’s a lot of people that they’re not overly confident with what the vehicle
