its basically a clear coat over the actual carbon layup. you can see individual fibers and lay directions. I love it. I have the gloss version that Trek calls “Carbon Smoke” on my Emonda SL 7. I also work for a Trek shop and see the gloss and matte versions on their raw carbon often. sometimes certain lines can look like a scratch or crack, so that can be disappointing if in a major view spot, otherwise I love the look.

I’m sorry but that looks awful.
I have an FX3 with a matte finish, however I spray detail it & it has some decent shine to it now.

It’s the carbon overlay. Completely normal
