A short, 1km long Byway Open to All Traffic in Hertfordshire between Luton and Hitchin. running between Luton White Hill and Hollybush Hill/Luton Road. It starts only 270 metres from the ed of Putteridge Road (Offley Byway 30; see video HE 105) and a short distance to the East is Harris Lane/Chalk Hiill/Temple Close (see video HE 101/102/103) so makes a good set of lanes to ride in series in this part of Hertfordshire.
Formerly surfaced with crushed concrete to form an unsealed, metalled surface it has subsequently become covered in a layer of soil and vegetation on the southern half, resulting in moderate ruts back to the hard surface. These are no real problem to ride.

Welcome to the byway Nomad my name is Tony Ferrari and thank you for watching my Videos for this video we’re looking at offley byway 51 which is just to the east of Luton but over the border into hartfordshire um it starts off from a road called Luton white Hill and he’s about 270 m from the end of another byway which is Patridge Road or offley

Boat 30 you can see that on video h105 as you can see the surface um appears to be quite rutted but in common with many halfa Cher Lanes this Lane was resurfaced a few years ago with crushed concrete and since then soil and then vegetation has formed over the top of

That what’s happened is that Vehicles passing along it have cut down through that layer back to the original metal surface so it’s unlikely that they’ll get any deeper they do hold a little bit of water but as you can see it seems to drain very well for most of its length the byway

Just runs alongside the edge of a field with a tree line to your left stays like this throughout its length you’ll notice the odd little points where there are trees to the right hand side the ruts appear to end momentarily and these areas appear to be a little bit drier which is unusual

Because usually they remain wetter under tree cover so a little bit of a paradox there um you see now the field is fenced off from this section and we continue just underneath the tree cover but I say generally it stays pretty dry along here the odd puddle sitting in these moderate

Ruts I mean when riding on a bike you see here you do get a little bit pushed into the little line which yeah um does sometimes end up with you stalling um this area here does get a little bit wetter um you see some larger sort of

Puddles along here but again it’s never caused any problems in all the time that I’ve been riding it it’s um a fairly popular route um you quite often meet um horses along here there’s a riding stables quite near the other end um but yeah usual advice applies you know pull over kill your

Engine wait for them to pass you if you come up behind a group of horses I’d always recommend you stopping and just wait for 5 10 minutes have a little break as you can see these farm buildings coming up on your right and that signifies the end of the lane and

It meets here basically the junction between holly bush Hill and Luton Road and there you go 1 kilm in total length and there you have it offly byway 51 thanks for watching the video if you liked it please remember to subscribe hit that Bell so that you get

Notifications when new videos come up and um have a look at the website www. byway nomad. co.uk and and um maybe see you out on the trail someday this is The bway Nomad thanks for watching
