The year is 1977 the king is dead Star Wars arrives on our Cinema screens the first game console was born bathrooms look like this and the average house price in Norway cost three bars of chocolate yay this is what Burg and Norway’s Second City look like ah a
Simple time no social media no internet no mobile phones and no food safety or hygiene regulations how long as that fish being sat there but anyways why are we here you see each year Bergen receives one day of sun shine and in 1977 some clever folk got together and
Said let’s celebrate this by organizing a race and this is not just any old race you see Bergen region is blessed with outstanding natural beauty hanga the third longest FID in the world is at your doorstep and if you cycle all the way along it you will reach Voss the
Adventure capital of Noah but you probably know it for its famous bottled water so fast forward to 2023 the king is not dead Star Wars continues game consoles look like this bathrooms look like this well at least mine ha and the average house price in Noah requires this amount of chocolate to purchase
What but most importantly Seafood is on ice and the Burgen to Voss bite race continues to be a big part of the summer calendar 46 years in counting my friends yeah we right and yours truly has been invited I haven’t done a race in 3 years
I’ve done zero training but if there’s a bottle of Voss water at the end of it how you yeah sign me Up so what’s the best way to get to Bergen fly to Oslo and take the scenic train it’s spectacular and look at this station it’s so cute it’s a mini train station the sun doesn’t shine much in Bergen but when it does oh my it is one
Of the most perfect places on the planet it’s like a fairy tale surrounded by seven mountains it’s clean safe organized it’s historic the grass is green and the girls are certainly pretty now the race is tomorrow and I only have time for one sightseeing activity you won’t find this on any of
Them top 10 attraction lists it’s out in the suburbs and only locals use it it opened in Spring 2023 so if you’re in Bergen this is the number one tourist attraction in my Books I’m in the world’s longest cycling tunnel and it’s pretty damn Cool at 3 km it goes straight through a mountain connecting a suburb with the city and radically reducing commuting time it also has a running track rest stops artwork a roundabout and the coolest Lighting Display this side of Vegas why would you drive to work when this is your morning
Commot well Bergen I am impressed I am so impressed well done Indeed I got to get to the start line as I’m beginning shortly and I want to try and interview a few people so guys follow me Tre Bergen was providing me with a bike for the race this one no I’m only joking this one I’m only joking this
One they’re the biggest bike shop in town and a very nice one at that they also play a big role in supporting the race with service stations along the Route don’t try that at home kids when you’re in a race if you don’t know where to start like is just follow the cyclist basically I’ve just seen about four go this way so I’ll follow them have you done this before yes you have yes it’s my third time okay so you
Know the you know the way yeah I do I do uh I haven’t I’m just here for the ride and for some hiking okay yeah and then you’re going back to the us back to the US uh in about 10 right well you’ve chose the perfect time
To come the weather’s so good right now it’s nice yeah how are you I’m very good how are you are you ready I’m ready ready for the race you’re in the first group yeah oh my God you are fast so what time are you expeced uh uh I’m
Going for a PR uh last year we did the 4 hours and 20 approximately so uh to beat our uh beat myself did you just hear that 4 hours and 20 it’s 165 km was to win the group for a woman so we were two women me and Emma who came first last
Year this is the first person I’m talking to and it’s the winner from last year what was the worst one you did what what year was it when it was really bad weather I don’t remember the year but it was terrible one year with it was both cold and
Raining and I guess it was in 2009 I guess 2010 but it has been several years like that you know but then again you get to wash you get some beer everything is perfect 1,500 Riders it’s one of the biggest uh cycling events in Norway how long have you been
Cycling uh since February yeah really this the first time yes yeah yeah follow us yes first time I’ve beening since I was 14 oh okay so you’re the pro yeah she’s the pro she’s been in Europe and yeah’s is it it must be completely different to Texas very different it’s
Colder so first two groups are gone the third group going off now okay we’re going in 15 minutes 15 minutes good luck guys oh the nerves are kicking In yeah we right here we go here we go goodbye Bergen it’s a bumpy start it’s a bumpy start okay I have three objectives number one obviously complete the race number two drink some Voss water and live forever and number three get over my death Road Seven trauma let me explain More the valley SL Mountain passet divides Bergen and hanga it’s Called this is um it’s not not officially called that that’s the name I’ve given it because I had a terrible experience on this road and I vowed I would never cycle it again until now I’m reliving The Experience albeit in a race environment where it’s extremely safe nevertheless let me take
You back 4 years welcome to my world 11 tunnels you got to climb from each one of them there was so much traffic they were flying past me this was the worst experience of my life on a bike and I’m still to this day Traumatized and now I’m about to relive it the good news is though we’re going the opposite way and it’s a lot better to cycle it from Bergen coming down to hanga because you get to descend through them 11 tunnels it was a breath of fresh air going the opposite way but every tunnel
I went through I just kept on thinking I cannot believe I cycled through these tunnels but I think I got over my trauma and I’m no longer afraid of death Road s but I would never cycle up it again forget that anyhow we come off the mountain
Pass and we are greeted by this little beauty one of the many waterfalls along the way and this one’s pretty cool cuz you can walk behind it uhhuh how cool is that now you may be thinking how did you manage to get off your bike film this and then catch up with everybody
Have I told you about these puppy [Applause] dogs I actually just came back the next day and filmed it 85k is in clock has stopped so it just starts again when you uh begin from here so at this point we reached this incredible F the third longest in the
World and it’s pretty flat and easy to cycle along it allowing you to have a nice comfortable Pace the problem is focusing on cycling when you have this view all the time I have to keep my eye on that wheel in front of me but all I want to do is look
Around check this out check this out oh my God that’s beautiful if 165 km is too much you can do the 78 km version which just goes along hanga and then to L that’s how you do it come on come On last climb I’m pretty exhausted now 145 K I’m littleit unfit I shouldn’t be feeling this exhausted where I am but we’ll power up there we’ll get up there and we’ll get to the Finish Line someway somehow so at this point my legs are cramping up which is very annoying but
It doesn’t really matter at the end of the day you’re only competing against yourself everyone who started the race no matter if they finish or not are winners because they decide to get up that morning and challenge themselves life without challenge is an empty place
To be and I’ve forgotten how much fun a race environment is you are surrounded by winners 15ks let’s do this come on power power Power the cramp didn’t stop me from powering going through to the Finish Line two of my objectives complete all I need now is a bottle of that magic boss Water but what is this cocacola I can’t believe it what how can this be we can’t end the film like this I think we should do the mega happy ending W the mega happy ending that’s that’s Doable 165 km of pure beauty and wonder Water Place what a race what an experience but what about our friends how did they do well Anders from Texas he set a target of 7 and 1/2 hours and he did exactly that and now he’s at home wondering when he’s going to return to
Burger the girls that had only started cycling in February did it in 6 and 1/2 hours I salute you girls our friend alen did it in 6 hours and I think this is his 21st occasion during this race I salute you sir and then puppy dogs 5 and a half
Hours it’s YouTube It’s YouTube yeah you and what about our champion Bata did she break her record you’re damn right she did 4 hours and 17 minutes 5 minutes faster than last year here number one again give us some love in the comment section come on and we should know that these races
Don’t just materialize out of fin air there’s huge amounts of work behind the scenes to make it happen and each year it gets harder and harder with more red tape this is Neils he’s been in charge of the race for many many years and like a Swiss clock it ran perfectly thanks
For all your work and all the volunteers and the police and everybody who’s involved all I need to do now is go home and order some V water on Amazon the only problem is they don’t deliver to Norway oh Well
