Have a trek fx that I bought in 2016. Haven’t ridden it in about a year. Last week I fully inflated the tires and took a ride. Next day the front tire was completely flat (pic shown). I buy a new tire for the front and the back tire is fine. A week later the other is completely flat (second pic). I’m in an apartment, bike on the first floor balcony.. is someone slashing my tires? Or is this an explainable failure on 7 year old tires that were recently re-inflated? Keep in mind that they look very similar and neither occurred while I was riding.

There’s no way to know for sure but it looks like you hit something sharp with a tire well beyond its life expectancy.

  2. 7… Years old? As in the bike is 7 years old and the wheels or … Like, if your tires are a year or 2 old I would replace them, 7 is wild.

I would not ride tires older than 2 years old and or over 2-3k miles depending on brand….i usually put new tires on at begining of every year…Jan/Feb. image you had been rollong donw a hill going 20+!?!

  4. They’re just older, appear to have been cycling through the seasons outside, and no pressure caused a crease and or weak point and they degraded. That said, if kept out of the elements and with some air in them to prevent creasing etc they can last many, many years.

Tires are good for about six years ridden or not. Those were probably dry rotted and blew out. Get new tires.

I’ve had a tire slashed and the cut was straight. That shape cut doesn’t look maliciously done.

Looks like they blew out on their own. You are lucky this didn’t happen while taking a corner or something. I don’t ride tires over 3 years old. If the bike is in the sun all day then replace like every 6months.

Thanks everyone. This is good knowledge. They’ve been replaced and I’ll keep it out of the sun.

  9. I don’t know if your tires got slashed or not, but there are a lot of folks talking shit about tire age on here.
Tire’s absolutely can last longer than people on here are saying.
I got back into cycling this year after several years off from it and dug my 1970’s schwinn out of the garage and put 100psi in the tires that were on it since probably 2011 or so and rode 1000 miles before I bought a new bike. My brother-in-law is still riding that bike with those 12yo tires.

  10. Oh well the tire lasted for 7 years so assuming no foul play it’s not worth investigating further.

If this was used for only 100km then maybe we need to see why a new tire slashed like this.

  11. Trust me, while spending $50-$100 on a set of tires may seem a lot. It’ll either save you from a long walk home or your jaw.

  12. What psi did you inflate it to? I’m assuming the Max PSI printed on the side right? That’s not you want to do.

i’m interested in taking 7 yr old tires of y’alls hands. they are fine if they are out of the weather. do you buy new tires for your car every 5 years even if you dont drive the car? its mileage dependent

The tred looks fine. That’s looks like a slash to me. Starts thin and quickly goes thick, not straight, and thins out consistently at the end. Someone did this to me in Seattle when I parked in front of a pizza place. Could be someone cracked out or someone just mad at the word and thinks bikes suck. Or you did something like pass by them too close or what ever. Either way, sorry that damage happend. Definitely check the rim strip to see if it’s compromised. If it looks like something got it too and the rim then I wouldn’t doubt it’s a knife that did it.

    2 things:
You won’t get a flat that massive and not notice it while riding lol that would be a massive blowout and woulda probably made you lose control of the bike and made a huge noise. Not the kinda flat that’s made from a shard of glass or something and leaks slow enough for you not to notice until the next day or two.
This is made more obvious by the fact that it’s two very similar puncture marks which means you would meant that you had to have ridden over the same hazard twice in the same tire spot, which doesn’t make any sense because most things that puncture a tire would stay with the tire.
Third thing, I’ve been riding 7 year old shitty Kenda tires all year on and off and haven’t had a flat yet.

those are slashed for sure. don’t throw the tire away though you can sew it back together with some braided fishing line and use shoe goo.
