The design of the High Street bus gate causes issues as it separates cycle and bus traffic for no real reason, only to immediately force them to cross over each others paths a short distance further on, as the buses pull in to their stops.

Most Oxford cyclists know the score here, and many avoid the cycle lane section so that they remain in primary position through the gate, but novice or less confident cyclists will find this situation daunting, at best. This is the only route from the city centre to the east of the city, and part of the reason very few cycling families choose to cycle into the city centre.

Maybe it’s time to do away with the arbitrary modal separation, and make the road less hostile for all cyclists, not just the confident ones.
