This week I find myself on the Greek island of Crete where it is very. very hot and equally as mountainous. I’ve hired a road bike so lets get on with it!

    1. Almost done rejoicing when it's under 35 degrees! Soon I'll be waiting till 3pm for the warmest time. Mostly still doing the Woodruff thing but doing the 1/2 commute route once a week. It's amazing how much a health care company in America cares about their clients when they have skin in the game! My wife who is ill, they could care less! Uninsured and uninsurable! For all the wrong in this world you have the edge there ! Cheap petrol anyone?

    2. Yep, big black beetle type called a. cicada. They rub their back legs together trying to attract a mate making the noise. Sounds like there are thousands of them but actually normally just a few can make a real loud din!

    3. My hope is to do Crete next summer. Did they have a decent selection size wise of bicycles? I would love to take my rubaix but probably not worth the risk. Thanks for the video.

    4. Love it!!! And cicadas (or something similar). Noisy. Summer isn't summer in Japan unless you hear cicadas. And then Autumn brings the 'ringing' or 'chirping' bugs which is actually quite cute and almost refreshing to hear!

    5. Crete is fantastic for cycling, been a few times. It's not flat so if you don't like hills, you're in for some pain. A mix of long gradual efforts or steep curving climbs. On the plus side, big fast decents, just watch out for the goats. The roads are well maintained and generally very quiet. From my experience, the drivers in Crete respect cyclists and don't skim you. Love the small villages and views.

    6. Great video, have visited Crete before but never tried cycling there, might have to repeat. Funny though that cycling does not seem to feature very much in Greece, when there we saw very few cyclists around and when you look at the Pros I cannot remember ever having come across a professional Greek cyclist – I wonder why.

    7. glad to hear your enjoying greece…i live the next island east of crete 'kassos' and yes there are NO flat roads here either! i cycle the mountains here 5-6 days a week with some at 25% + at 74yrs old i feel as good as ever and push my lowest gear of 34-32 when riding the steeper slopes….been here 9yrs now and dont regret moving from the u.k.as i can cycle throughout the year….we rarely get cyclists here because of the mountains but 'karpathos' my neighboring island seems to get a few due to an influx of europeans wanting to experience greece but much riding is off road with fabulous trails…hope all the riding goes well as the weather is oh soooo good! david.

    8. Crete is fantastic with great beaches but also the north Greece is also fantastic with no winds!!!
Take a look at Kastoria and Kavala, take a look at the island of Thassos (every year at the May many cyclists go to Thassos to make the 100km perimeter of this island).
I really enjoy your vlogs! Be healthy 🙂 Greeting from Kavala – Greece!

    9. Nice work! We have the most deafening Cicadas here in Japan during the summer. My ears did actually hurt recently! BTW, my 80 y.o father is visiting Japan from Pompey and 1.) he has been riding a bike for the first in years, and 2.) getting into your channel. I hope he can keep both of them up when he gets home. Ride safely!

    10. Superb footage. I could really feel and taste the Greek islands as you rode around. Would have loved to have been sitting in the cafe with the roof of pink bougainvillea as you pedaled past. If I ever get back to those islands I must remember to hire and bike and ride those quiet roads though the hills.

    11. Having just got back from Crete myself (Chania area), all I can say is well done for even attempting to cycle in that heat. My cycling highlight of the holiday was seeing continental rider Polychronis Tzortzakis doing hill and gorge climbs.

    12. Thanks for sharing the video.
I was in Crete 35 years ago. One of my most pleasant holidays ever. I travelled across the island by public transport. I also was in Agios Nicolaos, In the early eighties a popular TV-series, Who pays the ferry-man, was filmed here. I didn't rent a bike in Crete, just didn't think of that.
