Moments after Italy’s quartet broke the team pursuit world record, Denmark and Team GB took to the track. In that race, drama unfolded in Denmark’s final lap after having ridden towards a place in the top 4. Charlie Tanfield was detached from the British squad whilst Denmark charged on to surf his wheel until a crash swept away all Danish hopes.

  1. UPDATE – After this video was uploaded, Denmark had been offered a pathway into the final on Wednesday to ride against Italy for gold. This re-ruling was given with the information that Denmark had caught the British team, meaning that Denmark had won the heat. Great Britain finished the race in 4m28s so they will not fight for a medal after a hectic ride from them.

  2. How often could we watch a bike-car crash in a velodrome? after all it was a terrible incident and an awkward one indeed. feel sorry for team GB medal campaign, wish them a better luck in Paris.

  3. Seems like the Brits didn't do anything wrong (apart from not being fast enough to keep together and win, which is not against any rules). The Danish rider wasn't watching what was happening in front of him in a PURSUIT race and caused a crash. It seems like the Danes have got away with it, you could argue that the Brits lost anyway before the incident so they haven't been penalized, or you could argue the Danes deprived them of an opportunity to post a time, while failing to finish the race themselves through their own negligence. I guess the rules say the race is over as soon as the bikes touched, or were within a metre, or whatever the rule for "catching" is – I would have thought it should be when the third bike has passed the third bike, which didn't happen, but you guys are the experts on the rules.

  4. Your commentary does not fit the facts – the Danish guy had his head down and simply did not see the British guy in front and plowed straight into him. Even if you are not expecting a rider in front of you this is surely rather a stupid thing to do?

  5. So they let Denmark break the rules using illegal tape. Then Denmark cause a crash and DONT finish. But they get to the final….yea OK.

  6. first of all wtf was GB doing not slowing down when their third rider dropped.
secondly, the danish rider was a total idiot causing that crash (did he literally not see him due to the aero position).
thirdly, yes when you catch a team in a pursuit you win… why was that so hard to figure out?

    thanks for posting

  7. How can any time be taken when their is no 3rd rider? Also several other teams as well as GB lodged a complaint to the UCI as Denmark had used illegal equipment in the tape mentioned but also clothing that had not been registered or approved! I do not understand how or why rules can be applied as and when the UCI see fit? Does anyone remember Graham Obree? The Scotish cyclist who broke Moser's hour record on a bike he built himself using a salvaged steel frame, salvaged scrap parts and bearings salvaged from a washing machine. Shortly after Boardman broke the record on the Lotus bike which had been the subject of £700,000 in research and development, designed and built by Lotus! At the end of the day a bike can be light, aerodynamic and adorned with the most expensive top of the range equipment but it is all about the ability of the rider and nothing could have highlighted this fact more than Obree breaking the world hour record on a bike made from salvaged parts! UCI rules where changed, rewritten even new rules announced to deny Obree the credit he deserved all because his achievements proved you do not have to spend ridiculous amounts of money on a bike! My point is rules are rules and should be applied full stop, not subjectively or as and when it suits you!!

  8. Denmark will win the gold and set a new world record in the final. Had they not crashed, they would have taken at least 2 seconds of the Italiens

  9. 100% the Danish lead rider's fault as Tanfield was entitled to be on the track on his line as he was the 3rd man and needed to finish – all teams do this when a rider loses contact like that. The Dane clearly on the video had his head totally down in the seconds before the crash and was just as shocked that he had rode into the Brit. After the fall, that Dane showed very bad sportsmanship yelling at Tanfield, swearing like that and acting like a complete brat. It's a pity as I find Dane's mostly excellent sports. However the Dane's were faster and deserved to win.

  10. Did you watch it? cause really doesnt sound like it, since Denmark was not only breaking the UK but also 1.2 seconds ahead of the record Italy set in the race just before. Also the danish team was concentrating on keeping the line and getting low with the heads for a less wind, you would not really expect a rouge British guy being on the track if he has given up.

  11. It's a shame there are no crowds or the British could've consoled themselves by beating random Danish fans as they exited the velodrome as they did after losing the European Championship final to Italy.

  12. To all the British who are talking about cheating in Cycling – has fair game disappeared from the the thinking in UK – cheating is what took place in football 2 weeks ago with Sterling at the Euro – Why did he not take not take part in diving last night in Tokyo.

  13. Rules state, with a over take the rider in front has to hold their line, it’s then up to the passing rider to chose when and if they overtake. The passing rider clips the back of the first rider. Similar to a car accident, the fault lies with the over taking rider.

  14. So happy Italy won, Denmark are cheats. Cheated aero in heats (if that was 2012 GB team they'd have been DQ'd); then terrible sportsman ship. Wonder what is coursing through him to make him rage so much, unhinged. Wonderful news they lost.

  15. The issue that the British team have is not that they lost! Let's get that fact made now. We accept that we lost that race and we have no issue with that at all. Everyone loses events at the Olympics and that is the nature of the tournament.

The issue we have is the fact our rider was crashed into and then swore at! Usually, when you "accidentally" hit someone else the correct comment is to apologise. All the Danish rider achieved here was showing the world their bad nature, and bad temper.

Also, this is not the Euro's. I am sure there are many many YouTube videos about that and your welcome to berate, castigate and demean English people on there if you so wish. I am fairly sure though that Charlie Tanfield, all the British competitors at the Olympics as well as 99.9% of English people on YouTube were not at Wembley, would not have acted in the way those "fans" did, nor would purposely cheat at sports. I apologise for the stupidity of our fans at the Euros, but I was not there nor would I have acted in such a manner, and neither would our Olympics team.

    Cheers

  16. Doesn’t cycling have unsportsmanlike rules then? As the judges seem to have done and ignore the tape rules, Denmark won the race 1m before the crash but carrying on and hitting another rider at those speeds is very dangerous and surely there are rules about that!
