How fast do you think you could get up Alpe dโHuez? ๐ค Share your thoughts in the comment section below! ๐
Under 2 hours… on rollerskis
Hank, you are a beast..
I did it a few years back, but the route planner cocked up and my Garmin route didn't follow the classic route, had me turning right with 3 hairpins to go. Got to the hotel 1st, but have never lived it down! Took lots of photos !
Props for having the wherewithal for the narration and use of "cacophony" after going up that monster!
Hank Great insight into the TDF and Alpe d'Huez. You put up a great effort and solid time. The climb up up Alpe d'Huez would be a Bucket List accomplishment for me and I hope to complete it someday.
very well said #hank๐๐ช๐ช๐
I am starting to realize how brutal Jonas Vingegaard is๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ฑ. Ge is from freaking Thy!!!!
THY.! Litterally a place as flat as pancake in Denmark.๐คฃ
Jonas is something else๐ตโ๐ซ๐ฅด๐ถโ๐ซ๏ธ
Sepp Kuss has the Strava KOM 39:07 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was out of breath just watching you climb. Well done! Professional cycling is probably the most challenging sport on the planet. And the Tour de France is just the most brutal scenario for competition. Heat, distance, and the mammoth climbs. It's what makes cycling so appealing to many, including myself. Thanks for a very impressive video. All the best.
Good work. The tourยดs challenge is not this race, the thing is that they do this for weeks. Insane
Female rider at 6:14 your saddle is a good inch too high, there should be a pronounced bend at your knee at full extension. When unclipped your heel should be able to rest flat on the pedal at it's lowest point.
The riders are still in a group for a lot of the climb and still get aero benefits by rotating round at the front, a solo rider is going to be slower, so Hank may well have hung in the group.

I think even Cavendish a relatively light sprinter had an FTP of 325-350 watts at 154 lbs… Fabio weighs 172 but that pace is still probably a moderate tempo for him
Just being picked to ride the TDF you are a badass. Finish last? That dude is still on a level 99% of us can't even comprehend.
I for sure would make it. But not in just over an hour, not even on my best day. I have no clue how long it would take me obviously. Just getting to the top would be epic. This demo just shows the level those riders are on. Just insane.
I have ridden a few of the TdF Pyrenes climbs. If the TdF time window were increased by 50%, I'd be out. LOL.
Good effort. What's the weight difference. Did you take it into account at least in calculations?
I wish I can do it soonโฆ before old legs turn to wood ๐ข
Forza FABIO !!!
I'd consider it an honor to be passed by Hank narrating his journey up Alpe d'Huez, or like that guy at 8:18 wondering, "Is that Hank from GCN?!?" as I descended at about the same speed.
A couple of questions: wouldn't it have been better to go with lighter, shallow section wheels for climbing? And what Di2 mode does Hank – and other GCN riders – use? Syncro/semi-syncro/full manual?
I conquered it 3 weeks ago! It was brutal but so freaking beautiful!!! A dream come true. I did it an hour slower ๐ but that's a motivation to return and do it faster ๐ช๐ฝ
36 deg when I did it this year. Brutal ๐ข
This was eye opening. I had know idea that the sprinters were going so fast by mortal standards and still barely making the time cut.
Probably would make it a day trip …
How many calories are we burning in the 30 minute vs the 20 minute HIT sessions?
thumb up from Ukraine, where unfoutanately we can't organize any big cycle competitions because of war with Russians… love you, CGN…
Also the Angliru in Spain
We hope to implement the Alpe d'Uez map in Zwift
Must be from the UK if you think 25ยฐ-27ยฐ is sweltering. ๐คญ
I have managed to conquer Alpe d'Huez in 2022. I am one of the lucky cycling enthusiasts who managed to finish L'Etape du tour de France in 2022. I was smashed at the top and cried like a baby. I was so happy on that day. Thanks for remembering me about the feelings I have lived back then.
Time cut or not, your climb was impressive. Nice work!
Is this the same lengh than on Zwift ? If so, and if it's accurate it is astonishing than Hank did'nt make it under 57mn.
Just goes to show how fit these TDF cyclists are. Many of them domestiques who barely get a mention during the event but without them many of our "heroes" wouldn't be where they are or where during their heyday.
Thanks for posting this – it should let the average cyclist know they can't climb faster than TdF sprinters. There seems to be this belief that when commentators say "he's not a climber" that they mean he's slow, when it really just means he's fast but not as fast a true specialist climber
Why don't you guys just go do La Marmotte, 3B etc
One more trhing- what was a temperature? I don 2022 Etape and at route I was cooked so many times, and itโs big diferece do it ap 24c or 30c
My time? ๐ I am doubting that I could finish it in 3 hours. But, I am the same age as Hankโs Dad.
climbed 4 times.. best time 55min 6 secs
Great ride, too much injection of drama in the commentary
This is a wonderful illustration of just how hard Le Tour is and just how fast even the โslowโ climbers actually are. Well done.
Great ride anyway. This was on my bucket list when we lived in Germany for 6 years. 3 of those years were lost due to COVID. We are back in the US now, but we still have our house in Spain. It's still on my bucket list.
I don't ride bikes because I have bad balance but I think that cycling is the most impressive sport
Hank, donโt be to hard on yourself. One factor you did not consider and that is you adhered to the traffic conditions, while tour riders could cut and shorten as many corners as possible. How many meters does think that would encompass?๐ค
Well done! ๐
And to think that's just a tiny part of the whole thing ๐ .
Great job
Is the road always that free of cars?
