From Wikipedia about Forest of Panemune (Panemunės Šilas):

Panemunės šilas is a park in Lithuania. It is located in the county of Kaunas County, in the central part of the country, 90 km west of the capital Vilnius. Panemunės šilas is located 49 meters above sea level.

Panemunė forest – a pine forest in Aukštojė Panemunė , between Naujoji Panemunė, Nemunas river loop, Vičiūnai settlement and Raudonojo Kryžiaus street. In the park grows an object of natural heritage protected by the municipality – the friendship of oak and pine.

The first holidaymakers appeared in Panemunė after the First World War . In the beginning, men and women could not swim together because it was forbidden in public places.

Since 1926, The resort became more popular among the residents of Kaunas, the flow of holidaymakers was constantly increasing. It is also associated with the division of land plots, construction of villas and summer houses. In 1928 Silas named after dr. Jonas Basanavičius Park. Already at that time, new alleys were being designed near the old paths and paths of the park. In summer, the Kaunas narrow gauge was transported to the heath .

    Trails
Until 1933 about 5 km of new and old paths, named after forest animals and birds, were built in the park. New tracks were graveled, planted with Christmas trees, and sports and recreation grounds were set up.

Until 1935 the alleys of Gegučiai, Žuvėdrai, Undiniai, Lakštingalai, Lapiai, Stirnai and Briedžiai trails were built and arranged, and the Wolf Trail was designed. The total length of the alleys and paths was 7 km, half of which were planted with Christmas trees. In addition, two new alleys have been designed – Storks and Nameless. The southern part of the park was managed “in a resort”, the northern part was left as a reserve.

    Sanatoriums
In 1930 on the outskirts of the park (now the corner of Žuvėdrų ave. and Kruonio str. ) On behalf of Kazys Grinius . 1934 the sanatorium plot was increased to 1.64 ha (according to other data, a 3 ha plot was leased). The sanatorium had central heating, water supply, sewerage, electricity, and a rich library. 1937 _ it had 80 beds and could accommodate more patients during the summer season.

In 1932 the Lithuanian Red Cross Sanatorium was established in the southern part of Vičiūnai (between the Red Cross and Kiškių St.). A 1.75-hectare plot of land has been allocated to it.

1933 dr. Vanda Tumėnienė established a private children’s sanatorium. For this purpose, a plot of 4214 m² of land between the current Elnių st. and Kiaunių st. Later, due to lack of space, the founder asked for an increase in the plot. 1937 The Land Reform Board leased another 2,000 m2 of land to it. Dr. Tumėnienė sanatorium was open all year round. It had baths, showers, an X-ray cabinet, quartz lamps and other equipment.
    Resort

By 1937, there were 1,200 summer holidaymakers registered in Panemunė, and the number of holidaymakers increased even more on weekends. The water quality in the Nemunas was checked, there were two beaches, two boarding houses, 15 villas for holidaymakers (seven villas belonged to the military), a dining room and a living room. The rent of rooms in the resort was higher than in Palanga , and living here was as expensive as in Kaunas. Every year, about 1,200LTL (350 EUR) was collected from the population, and about 9,000 LTL (2400 EUR) from the summer residents.

“Live” music was spreading in the pine forest, and May music was being held. The first Lithuanian scout camps were organized in Panemunė district. President Antanas Smetona (a coincidence named after him on the Nemunas River) came from the city to take a walk and ride a horse on the horse.
