A policeman is seriously injured in hospital after a night of “huge destruction by a riotous mob” in Dublin on Thursday.

Garda officers made 34 arrests after what police chief Drew Harris called the country’s worst public disorder “for decades”.

He told a press conference on Friday morning that 11 police vehicles had been destroyed and “numerous” officers injured in the violence which involved an “element of radicalisation”.

Thirteen shops were looted during the rioting that was triggered after at least three people were injured in a knife attack outside a school in the city centre.

A five-year-old girl and a teacher in her 30s remain in a “serious condition” in hospital, he added.

    1. Let's see what politicians make of this violence. Will they say: "immigration is not a problem, only people who are against it are" – "or will they say "some parts of our population seems to be discontent with the way we have been handling immigration. Let's find out what the silent majority thinks of all this. If necessary, we need to adjust our policies."

    2. Why not ask the police up front to pick a side? Aren't the living men and women acting as police liable for their actions? And due to the Nuremberg trials, has it not been proved that "I was just following orders" is not a valid defence and could lead to a higher form of lawful punishment for such men and women?

    3. There is undoubtedly a problem, but it isn't the people; rather, the government is the one who is blind to the consequences of its "virtuous" policies.

    4. People keep saying here that the West needs to be careful with who it allows in, but really it's Europe that is too lenient. Other Western countries aren't having so much of a problem – NZ, Australia, Canada, etc. Even in the US, most illegal Mexicans are there as the Mexican wages are so low and they aren't bothering Americans and they just want to get on with life, so most Americans are ok with them. What has been allowed to happen in Europe is just ridiculous. Just too many people from cultures that are so vastly different and they have no interest in fitting in.
