Transgender women will be banned from competing in British Cycling’s competitive women’s events in changes that will see the men’s category become an open one.

The move, which is set to take effect by the end of the year and only covers British Cycling races, ends the hopes of Emily Bridges, who set a national junior men’s record in 2018 and came out as a transgender woman in 2020.

British Cycling chief executive Jon Dutton tells Sky News’ Rob Harris how the decision was arrived at.

    1. From a biological perspective, male and female are typically determined by the presence of certain sex chromosomes and the development of specific reproductive organs and secondary sexual characteristics.

In humans, most individuals have either two sex chromosomes: XX (female) or XY (male). Individuals with two X chromosomes typically develop female reproductive organs and secondary sexual characteristics, such as breasts and a higher voice pitch. Individuals with one X and one Y chromosome typically develop male reproductive organs and secondary sexual characteristics, such as facial hair and a deeper voice.

However, it's important to note that biological sex is not always strictly binary. Some individuals may have atypical chromosomal patterns or variations in the development of reproductive organs or secondary sexual characteristics. These variations can include conditions such as Turner syndrome (45,X), Klinefelter syndrome (47,XXY), and Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (AIS), among others. These variations highlight the complexity of biological sex determination and the existence of intersex individuals.

It's also important to distinguish between biological sex and gender identity. Gender identity is a deeply held sense of being male, female, or something else, which may or may not align with an individual's assigned sex at birth. Gender identity is a personal and individual experience that can vary independently of biological sex.

    2. It's been proven that a male transforming into a woman has a much better advantage, then the women he is competing against. I don't know why women organizations aren't up in arms about this.

    3. I may have misunderstood the statement, but it sounded like the Interviewer said "the science isn't certain" before asking a question about "inclusiveness". What science is that? The one that can't define what is a woman? The "science" has been perfectly clear for thousands of years and most real science, like archaeology, has clear definitions.

    4. prime minister r.sunak mp.said its important 2preserve single sex spaces 4biological women.which I personally agree with.this is an issue that effects women & their daughters so their opinion on this matter should be respected & listend2.

    5. Let's get to the truth of it all..When a born male human wants to race against born female humans it's because He Can't Win Against Other Born Male Humans!!!

    6. scientific evidence based decision is what makes sense here. if only our governments would make policies like Jon Dutton made

    7. Please do t explain the ban, every single human being with a brain does not need an explanation lol. Willy ,,,,, man…..minge………woman…….it’s quite simple really

    8. "The science isn't certain." ???

      What nonsense,
      – there have always been separate categories for male and female,
      – for the most obvious of reasons.

The further a society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those who speak it.

    9. Don't bother celebrating, because British Cycling has explicitly stated that MEN can still use the WOMEN'S changing rooms if it makes them more comfortable…regardless of how UNcomfortable it makes the women, so this ban is of cold comfort.

    10. They don’t want an open event because it means they will have to compete against other men, and not have an unfair advantage. They hate that.

    11. How hard was this process? "Pretty damn easy actually. Women and men are different sexes and the devision is based on sex. Men and men and women are women. We have had enough of the Woke brigade taking nonsense".
