Juan Pujol Garcia’s neighbours think nothing of the new Spanish family that moves in during the war. But this quiet man who lives in suburban London and works for the BBC is a master of military deception. He runs a Double Cross network of invisible men who run rings around the Germans before, during, and after D-Day.

    1. This story’s unsung hero must be Garbo’s wife, Araceli. Without her contacting the Americans in Portugal, Garbo may never have had a chance to unleash his powers of deception and Operation Fortitude might not have fooled Hitler. But it turns out that Araceli absolutely hates living in London. Her homesickness is so bad that at one point she threatens to reveal her husband’s secret to the Spanish embassy! Suffice to say MI5 have their hands full with her.

    2. Smarter people have said that Garbo's reports were made of irrelevant facts, obsolete facts and "facts" he just made up. Those obsolete ones were the most important ones as they prove his legitimacy, irrelevant facts can be ignored by human error (agent doesn't know is info they gather truly important) and "facts" just made up get easily swallowed with those two.

    3. I realize that this is a rebroadcast, but you overwhelmed us on D-Day, as did the allies on Germany. Thanks for picking up some of the scattered pieces, Astrid seems to have some of the best pieces. The lady knows a gem. Would love to have been around the table when Astrid said, "This is mine!" Consummate presenter. Few peers.

    4. "All war is deception" War? Ah, I don't know if I want to be shot at. Deception? I'd rather deceive the enemy. Something to remember.
Pujol is a hero. An inspiration to us all. Here's a tip: I may not be able to convince that guy of anything, but if he can convince his boss …then I'm golden….. I think also ritical to the success of these double agents is how effectively the Brits rolled up actual German spies. So they were the only sources. But seeing how readily people latch on to sheer nonsense and conspiracy stuff….
Garbo chewing out his contact. Classic. This is like the two Brits who escaped Coldwitz POW castle in German uniforms. As they walk through the gate, the guard doesn't salute, so the Brit chews him out. The other Brit is thinking, let's go, let's go… you're gonna get us caught… later his friend explains, It would've been suspicious had a German officer allowed such a slight to go unpunished.
