A major eruption of a supervolcano in Italy could impact climate worldwide

According to new research, the Phlegrean Fields volcanic area, located west of Naples, Italy, is erupting with early indications of a new caldera cycle for one of the most dangerous supervolcanoes in the world. Researchers fear there may be a “potential reawakening” of the volcano, per a recent study published in Science Advances.

Volcanic ash from Phelgrean Fields, also known as Campi Flegrei, caused darkness in the skies over Europe 200,000 years ago during its largest known eruption. Climate change was a major result of the eruption of Campi Flegrei, or “Burning Fields” in Italian. A 2010 study that appeared in Current Anthropology suggests that the extinction of Neanderthals during the ensuing volcanic winter was probably caused by the strong eruption of Campi Flegrei.
