    2. Interesting and informative. Nice post card picture 📷 of one of the bombed out cities in Europe. Plenty of post war governmental changes during the 1st post years war. I'll bet a good # of women re married. Thinking that their husband's weren't returning home after war's end.

    3. "I had no idea of the pitfalls that lay ahead!" Willkommen im Klub! Hundreds of millions of Europeans [including Brits, will they or nil they] would undoubtedly have said the same in a variety of languages, not all of them European. My British ancestors were not exactly welcomed by the Wampanoag people, and later they welcomed the Crown's Redcoats with musket and cannon before forcing them out. My Irish ancestors and their friends found the Protestant Yankees [New Englanders-Nicht alle Amerikaner sind echte Yankees!] welcoming them to only the worst and dirtiest, jobs, the most prestigious being police and firemen. Eventually we got back at them by taking over the state, but AFAIK, without reprisals of any kind. My Prussian great grandfather married into one family of patriots of the 1774 revolution and his son married an Irish woman. Oddly, Massachusetts is a state that designates itself a Commonwealth, is one of the most Catholic by identity, but one of, if not the least, religious of the 50. Those American morons who think that immigrants and minorities have an easy life are both uneducated and deluded.

I have visited Germany at least ten times, and Austria and Switzerland besides. I studied German history [including the Holy Roman States] and language, though my German was not great and is now worse. I was only twice met with dislike based on the defeat and US occupation. Only through these videos, and some newly released war footage and news articles, like details of US GIs stealing previously stolen artworks, can I even imagine what it must be like to be defeated and occupied. Despite some of the comments, even my own, being critical, they are not only good but necessary for a full understanding of history and society.

    4. Regardless of the politics, these stories have a real human dimension which lend themselves to a video/film presentation. It's Fleet Week here in San Francisco, as I type this, I hear the Blue Angels practicing their routines.

    5. Very interesting perspective of a non-com Germany soldier, POW, and translator for a British Officer during the rebuilding years in Germany before immigrating to the USA.

    6. 5:30 – The Morgenthau Plan really went pretty much nowhere; cooler heads realized that impoverishing Germany mean impoverishing Europe.
16:30 – That huge overhang of debt had to be settled. I was impossible to start re-establishing prosperity otherwise.
17:25 – Regardless of the trigger, that was inevitable. The Soviets were going to introduce universal poverty in their area and it would require a separate state. And fences and walls.
