Finland’s Prime Minister accuses Russia of aiding migrants in illegal entry, alleging collaboration with Russian border guards. Migrants reported arriving by car and cycling in small groups across the 1,340km border between Finland and Russia.

Finnish officials note a recent increase, registering around 89 crossings in two days, compared to 91 in the four months prior. Colonel Matti Pitkaniitty of the Finnish border guard states migrants, arrived legally in Russia but lack authorization for entry into Finland.

Traditionally, Russian guards prevented arrivals at the Finnish border without proper documents. Most activity observed around border crossings at Nuijamaa and Vaalimaa in south-eastern Finland. PM Petteri Orpo accuses Russian authorities of facilitating illegal crossings, suggesting collusion with border guards.

In 2021, migrants used routes via Belarus to enter EU member states causing tensions and accusations of “hybrid warfare.” Finnish authorities prepare for potential increased crossings, emphasizing the need to manage the situation and secure the border.
