This stage of our bike tour takes us from Bad Kohlgrub via Eschenlohe and Ohlstadt to Murnau on Lake Staffelsee.

We leave Bad Kohlgrub and ride through the picturesque landscape of the Upper Bavarian foothills of the Alps. Dark forests alternate with lush flowering meadows. We repeatedly see herds of cows grazing. A picture book idyll!
But not everything here is pure paradise. Near Grafenaschau we see the traces of a major landslide on the Hörnle and remind ourselves that the mountains can also develop a destructive life of their own.
We continue cycling along flowering meadows. The wild irises, which are currently in all their glory, are particularly beautiful.
Then we take a short detour into the Murnauer Moos moorland to the Lake Langen-Köchel-See. The lake is the naturally flooded pit of a former quarry. The water is crystal clear and deep blue. We see lots of tadpoles swimming in the water. Today we can hardly imagine that glaucoquartzite was mined here until the year 2000, with blasting and everything that goes with running a quarry.
We continue through the lovely foothills of the Alps. We come to Eschenlohe in the Loisach valley. Here we are already in the area of the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain. From the bridge over the river Loisach we have a beautiful view of the mighty mountains and the canoeists floating downstream. Before we continue along the Loisach, we pay a visit to the late baroque parish church of St. Clement.
Near Ohlstadt we come to a romantic little church, the Fieberkircherl. It is a baroque plague chapel that was built as a thank you for the end of the plague. There is a bench in front of the chapel, perfect for our short break and with a fantastic view of the Zugspitze massif.

Then it’s not far to Murnau on Lake Staffelsee, a picturesque artists’ town in the so-called Blue Land. We’re going to the center of the small town. The pedestrian zone with its colorful houses is a popular promenade. The view of the baroque Virgin Mary Column with the mountains in the background is beautiful. Murnau Castle is not far from the pedestrian zone. The former castle was converted into a palace in the Baroque period and today, among other things, shows artworks by Gabriele Münter and other Blue Rider artists. We continue walking and after a few steps we find ourselves in front of the late baroque parish church of St. Nicholas.
Then we leave the old town and walk to the Münter House. It is located just outside on a slope in a lush, flowering garden and with a beautiful view of the town center of Murnau. The famous painters Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky lived here from 1909 to 1914. They made the house an important meeting place for the artistic avant-garde at this time and formed the Blue Rider artist group together with Franz Marc, August Macke and other Expressionist painters.
Today the house is a museum. Unfortunately we are too late to view the interior. But this isn’t our first time in Murnau and we added a few interior shots from a former visit to this video.
Near the spa park we come across the King Ludwig Monument. It dates back to 1894 and is the first monument in Germany dedicated to the legendary fairytale king Ludwig II. In the spa park, an oversized hat is reminiscent of Ödön von Horváth. The Austro-Hungarian writer experienced the main phase of his artistic work here.
We see art of a different kind on our way to Lake Staffelsee. Graffiti by young artists is shown at a railway underpass, the StreetArt Gallery. And finally we stand on the shore of Lake Staffelsee. On this warm summer evening there is still a lot of activity on and in the lake. We look for a nice spot and enjoy a wonderful sunset.

The next stage of our bike tour goes via the well-known Benediktbeuern monastery to Bad Tölz.
