The bike industry is in crisis, but is it all manufacturers’ fault? On last week’s show we talked about the bikepocalypse hitting the cycling world and you left loads of comments sharing your thoughts. So, we’ve spoken to Cervélo co-founder Gerard Vroomen to find out if bikes really are a rip off. We also have news of a new world record, a $25,000 Lotus e-bike and more.

  1. I brought my bike in 2010 and still have it ,lots of bearings and brakes lol but it still looks new ,funny thing is with bikes ,its a bike, not much really changes you just use your legs to pedal. Capitalism and consumerism is on the brink because of the shareholders and corporate greed,i can see a lot of companies going to the wall.

  2. I find it crazy that these bikes are the same price as motorbikes. The tech is not really needed but it does make people happy and proud to own that bike. For me I'm happy with my £3.5k Orbea Orca, it does everything I need. People can just spend their money on whatever makes them happy.

  3. So here's a thing. Coming from the auto manufacturing world (2W & 4W) I spotted this a few years back and thought this might be an investment opportunity into the 2W sector. But I couldn't find a publicly quoted bike Co. to buy into. So they're a cash rich bunch of private equity owners not needing outside investment, generally, and keeping it all for them selves. Someone prove me wrong please. I followed the money from all the big makers, and there’s not an investment opportunity, I think. Someone with a bit of financial nous might help answer this question, but I couldn’t find an answer to it. Forget Wiggle etc, Distributors, and middle men, it’s the Specialised, Trek, SRAM, I'm interested it. Any ideas?

  4. First you show us one of the worst and ugliest Bike, you probably can spend 20000 Bucks on, and start talking, if the Bike Prices are too high? Priceless 🤣🤣👍‼️

  5. Mr Vroomen just won't say " yes, the 15000 $ bike isn't worth 15000$"! It doesn't depend on, if there are some people who will pay this joke of a price! That moment, the company's opened Pandoras Box of stupid prices, was the end of realistic price politics.
I'm a MTB idiot since 1990, I'm doing DH for Hobby, and I'm a bike mechanic, and for me an expensive Top bike, is in the range between 6000 and max 8000 €. That means, you get a cheaper version of this bike model for 3500 to 4500 €.
That's OK, for the amount of high tech you get ( on a DH Bike for example). But if the top model is between 15000 and 27000 € ( pinnarelo???), what is the price for the " cheaper" entry version 🤔🤣🤣❓

  6. SRAM is the biggest offender in the industry. Pretty much eliminated all of their high end mechanical groups. There can't be demand if it's not even available. We didn't "choose" xdr, wireless shifting, and disc brakes they made that choice for us.

  7. Of course! I want a bike of my own my friend lent me a gt zr5000 and I want something newer with those thick simplistic looking frames but 2,200+ for an entry point is crazy. I get the components and shit but I’m all for aesthetics prior to components coming from a 30lb bike to the gt

  8. Are Cycle2work schemes having an inflationary effect (in the UK, at least)? A friend of mine bought a £6k-£7k Fairlight but it only 'cost' him just over half that because of the tax saving – he said he'd never have bought a bike that expensive otherwise. If the only option was to pay the sticker price, then would brands have to bring their sticker prices down?

  9. If the prices of bikes stay the same say goodbye to those brands 🤷🏽‍♂️ simple…

Who’s going to pay £5k + for a bike unless your that into it

  10. How dare you insult our intelligence by asking this dumb, stupid question. The whole world knows they are ripping us off. You at GCN need to give your heads a wobble. Someone saying if someone can afford 12 to 15k and wants to pay it, then it's ok doesn't cut it.
Would be good to see someone break down the cost of every piece of a 15k bike and justify the price. It will never happen of course. The reason the industry is taking this hit really is greed.
I got an 11 speed Ultegra Groupset 6 years ago brand new and paid £400. Look now. During covid bike sales rocketed and they put the prices up to cash in. Got so much stock through greed and are now left with a load they can't sell. They get what they deserve.
