While out cycling, I came across HMP Styal Prison and Young Offenders Institution. So I had a quick look around the publicly accessible areas outside the prison via the open path, taking care not to go inside any buildings or the prison itself.
It was a very clean and tidy facility, and the site has an interesting history. There were no signs saying no photography anywhere I went, and the bylaws type sign at the road entrance made no mention of taking photographs. I particularly liked the Clink Restaurant and the fantastic work it does with its students.
I had a great interaction with a friendly lady prison officer (who incorrectly told me I couldn’t film outside the prison, and asked me to leave the property), and 2 not so great interactions with shouty guys.

Hello do you mind me asking what camera are you using for main shots?
Linden trees were used for shields. Lind is norse(?) for lid or shield.
Unless there is a bylaw saying no photography, it is perfectly legal and lawful to photograph from a place with implied public access.
It amuses me when they think you are filming cars and you can't get any information from plates
The clink..been there for meal few times lol. Its staff are all prisoners, chefs do NVQ’s for qualifications when they leave. The food I have to say is fabulous..so anyone who reads this and not been..it defo worth a visit 😁👍🏻

Styal is not an open prison so photography and video is possible on the prison grounds. The law (section 40D of the Prison Act 1952) is about no photography or video inside a prison. That means where prisoners are. In an open prison, prisoners can access any part of the grounds. So no photography or video is possible in an open prison's grounds.
Marti Blagborough got caught by this. Or rather HMP used that as the excuse to charge him – unfortunately setting a precedent which means that photography and video whilst in public parts of closed prisons can be carried out.
8:10 You are filming and cycling. Note that the prison officer has no issues with you cycling around, just the filming. But then she's stupid and hasn't been properly educated about the actual law. She's too stupid to educate herself so she just goes on her crap training which takes into account her lack of intelligence which just tells her that no use of a camera is allowed at all.
Please don't distract them from smuggling drugs in. That's not fair.
