I am Francis I, King of France. I was born in 1494 as the eldest son of Charles, Count of Angoulême. I was a precocious child, and I was educated by the best tutors in France.
In 1515, my cousin Louis XII died without an heir. I became king at the age of twenty-one. I was determined to be a great king, and I immediately set about reforming the French government and military.
I was also a patron of the arts and sciences. I brought many Italian artists and scholars to France, and I helped to establish the Renaissance in France.
However, my reign was also marked by war. I waged war against the Holy Roman Empire and Spain in an attempt to expand French territory. I also invaded Italy in an attempt to claim the dukedom of Milan.
In 1525, I was captured by the Spanish at the Battle of Pavia. I was held prisoner for a year, and I was forced to sign the Treaty of Madrid, which ceded a great deal of French territory to Spain.
After my release from captivity, I continued to fight against the Holy Roman Empire and Spain. I also allied myself with the Ottoman Turks, which shocked many Christians in Europe.
In 1545, I signed the Treaty of Crépy with the Holy Roman Empire. This treaty ended the Italian Wars, but it also left France weakened.
I died in 1547 at the age of fifty-two. I was succeeded by my son, Henry II.
