Sorry I missed you and Laura on the route, Russ, but am glad you enjoyed yourselves and got to participate in this event before heading to Spain — who knows if/when it'll ever happen again.
And, yeah, there were LOTS of cyclists and unfortunately some reckless ones who were slaloming through bike traffic. An ambulance was called for one cyclist, and another was injured and receiving medical attention on the side of the slow lane.
In Mexico City cyclovia is weekly basis event happening every Sunday… They just close all Central streets for car traffic.
We also have a Car Free Day every Sunday from 6am to 11am in Jakarta Indonesia since 2002. CFD also applied to neighbouring areas and cities, but hours may vary accordingly.
Man! Can’t believe you guys were there too. I was there on my penny farthing. Partypace!!
The Police must have immediately thrown in the towel and retreated at the sight of this lawless biker mob.
We rode to the lightrail line did the ride and returned. Sorry we didn't get to see you today. Thanks for your great content. Have a good trip to Spain.
What an amazing event. Soooooo many people walking, cycling, skating …………..
People enjoying the freeway.
Both the Arroyo and Pasadena freeways are old and somewhat dangerous for cars to use due to their lack of emergency shoulders, short on and off ramps, and poor maintenance. Makes sense to use them for bikes since a few lives might be saved. As a teenager i used the 210 freeway when it was still dirt early in the AM before construction crews woke up. It made my school commute, from Duarte to Pasadena, safer. As it neared completion i could no longer use it. I used my venerable 3 speed Schwinn Racer.
Such a wonderful time, hopefully 626 Golden Streets keeps the event going.
The 110 is the first freeway in the country
Meanwhile, here in far NorCal today, I rode a 20 mile gravel loop and saw one guy walking his dog.
This is awesome! 😎💯
I did the original one. I was thinking of riding there today but I was riding to the beach and it is in the other direction.
I bought a new RockCombo in 1989, but sold it quickly, as the concept was great, but the execution was poor. But I never gave up on the concept of “one bike for everything “. After several more failed attempts, I now have a Tanglefoot Hardtack- a modern day RockCombo, that’s much more capable and comfortable than the original.
I didn't hear about this until this morning when I was having some coffee and it was on the KTLA news page. I threw on some clothes and hauled butt to get down there! I wish I had known and I would have been there at 7am – so I didn't get to ride the whole route 😞 but I did get to ride on LA's first freeway for a while at least! 🙂
One of the things I noticed was that if every one of those bikes was a car, it would have been a massive traffic jam and we would have been going slower ! So in my opinion this section of freeway (the Arroyo Parkway) has a higher throughput with bicycles than with cars 😉
I am sad that I missed seeing you again. The ride was crazy, on the edge of dangerous, and joyous. The recently extended A Line from Long Beach, made it a multi-modal, no car day for me on my single-speed, belt drive Raleigh. 🙂
Have a great remainder of your stay in the US, and the best of luck with your move to Spain.
filipino people always have the raddest bikes
And I thought the road surfaces were bad in the UK!
Bikes allow so many people to use the road, imagine how much space this number of people would take up if they were all in cars.
There'd be no social contact or interaction either. Great initiative!
LAURA!
SO enjoyable watching this video!
An Organized Ride, not "thousands of cyclists," shut down a freeway.
I'm impressed with how quickly you got a video up! I was there and saw every variety of wheeled transit available. But yes, an overwhelming amount of people were there for a while.
They closed a portion of the 15 in southeast San Diego back in March, and it was magical. Wish I could have made it up for this!
I couldn’t get off work 😭 ! Cool to see friends in the background tho!
We could have this every day. I want to live in that world.
"SHUT DOWN" seems clickbaity for an organized ride event.
This should be a wake up call for all city planners. A clear and present need for safe, protected bike infrastructure for everyone!
So cool this happened! What a great demonstration of how many commuters would fit in the same area if 'on bikes' compared to 'in cars'. When still moving 🙂
In 1946, 1956 and 1973 / 1974 in NL we had a few "car free Sunday's" were all car traffic was forbidden on Sundays. In 1973 this was for 10 Sundays in a row. I still vaguely remember (I was 8) how weird is was to Rollerskate / Bike on all streets without worry. It also made for some unreal pictures.
In later years there have been car-free days in several cities, but not on that country-wide scale
Bullshit headline. A 6 mile stretch of freeway was shut down for 4 hours so bikers (northbound) and walkers/runners could use it. Stop with the click bait and tell the truth.
there's always that one dude on a fixie wearing a suit
We had "car free sundays" (yes I am that old) in Germany and I remember cycling on the two lane bridge from Erlangen to Dechsendorf. It felt strange and great at the same time.
who made this one? "some chinese guy" lmao
Every city should do this on some street. Along with more pedestrian streets. The turn out and the joy of no cars astounds people.
Hey Russ what's the brand for your helmet mirror. I have an old rowing mirror on my glasses you had years ago. This one looks better
Imagine what every day would look like with this volume of people using bike infrastructure! If it only existed!
This looks like so much fun! I wish they could do this in Cape Town. Love your channel man
🎉
Uggggh. I would have totally driven to LA, had I known about this!
Oldest freeway in America
See Who Framed Roger Rabbit for the history behind its inception
Love watching this style of video from you Russ, big part of what got me into/kept me into cycling back in 2018/19
I was there man!!!
Thanks for the video and safe travels to you and Laura!
So great to run into you guys at the Orange Grove exit and thanks for the Party Pace stickers! Honored to make it for a couple of seconds in your video along with my friend
I am sad that so many people enjoy cycling who are almost never to be found doing their daily stuff on their bikes because politicians still love the butter on their bread that the industie greases. So you can go to Critical Mass in Barcelona soon. Massa Critica 😄👌. Have a good flight!
Love your mirror!
I'm so sad I missed this 💔💔💔
As a regular cyclist in the LA area, one positive aspect I'm starting to notice is that motorists are becoming more courteous to me while on my bike. As more people ride their bikes at these type of events, the more they empathize with the cyclists they see on the road when driving. It's definitely a step in the right direction!
Ha! A little Montana stuck to you: “the amount of people crushed in here is unreal.” Probably as many people attending as live in Missoula. 😂
I dont know why, but this video game me the chills!
Imagine a world without cars….
Imagine car-free bicycle freeways around our cities. You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.
Infrastructure is so important for safety and less hostile relations between cyclists and motorists.
As a cycle commuter and cycle delivery person (VeLove) I wonder if these types of events increase the level of hostility in the cyclists/motorists relationship.
Normal day in Copenhagen… 🇩🇰 🙂✌️
