You can have and keep your nice bikes, but should secure them properly: Lock the bike frame to the wheel(s) AND to a secure point, like a bike rack or a traffic sign pole. It can be pretty bad though in big cities.

When I was young, I didn't needed to use my flimsy lock on my bike. 20 years later, I had to lock my bike seriously and attach it something sturdy (tree, traffic sign) as well. They say, the stolen bikes all go to the east……
