We sent our GCN mechanic Owen to the British National Hill Climb Championships 2023 in the Lake District to take a look at and weigh some of the coolest bikes at the event, including winner Andrew Feather’s super lightweight Cannondale. There are loads of rim brakes, track tubular tyres and all sorts of other weight saving tech and features on these UCI illegal bikes!

    1. Ditch the disc brakes why do you need them on a hill climb bike why do you need them on a road bike full stop. Only an idiot would use them on a hill climb you could save even more weight. someone has got a bike down to 4kg with rim brakes I know which one I’d use

    2. I'm also keeping a Cannondale Caad12 with sram red/force22 for hillclimbs or a PRs. Weight is 6.8kg with clincher carbon wheels, as my frame itself weighs just 1070g in size 54 and fork if i correctly remember 340g it is very competitive to many carbon bikes out there. For general riding it feels too stiff though, as i got used to a bmc teammachine.

    3. I understand it's part of the cyclist's outfit, but if every gram counts, going uphill, on a day like that, you don't need sunglasses, you don't need gloves, unless you are afraid of loss of traction
