We will drive along Kalicha Gora Street and Drahomanova Street, as well as through the territory of the Citadel.
The Lviv Citadel is one of the most valuable defensive structures of the city that have survived to this day. The atmosphere that prevails here still touches the soul of every visitor, because the history of this place will not be forgotten soon.

History of the citadel: interesting facts
The Austrians, who built the citadel in the 19th century, never used it. At the beginning of the 20th century they gave it to the Russians without a fight.
The only battles that caused significant damage to the citadel took place during the Ukrainian-Polish war. As a result of shelling, the facade of the tower from the side of the street was damaged. Copernicus
.The citadel suffered the greatest destruction not because of hostilities, but because of banal oversight. Due to the fact that the Soviet authorities practically did not use these premises, during the last century the Lviv citadel turned from a powerful building into ruins.

Tower of Death – Dancing on Bones
It is worth mentioning separately the fate of the citadel during the Second World War, because those pages of its history were particularly sad. Here, after the occupation of the city, the Germans created the Stalag-328 concentration camp.
The territory of the citadel was fenced with barbed wire, and additional ditches were created around the building. The Germans brought prisoners here, where they subjected them to severe torture, cold and hunger.
The conditions created in Tower No. 2, which was even nicknamed the Tower of Death, were particularly harsh. The Germans deliberately spread diseases among the prisoners, after which they burned the corpses en masse in the yard in front of the towers.
In total, during the existence of the concentration camp, about 300,000 prisoners passed through it, half of whom never left the gates of the citadel.
It is ironic that today a five-star hotel and restaurant operates in the same place where thousands of people starved to death. Tower No. 2 has been completely restored and turned into a recreation facility, in which there is not even a hint of the terrible history of this place.
