Cycling Croatia Highest Road : Sveti Jure climb & Biokovo Skywalk – Road cycling Makarska Riviera

Cycling Croatia is a must do experience. The highest road in Croatia is Biokovo Road that climbs up to Sveti Jure passing also by the Biokovo Skywalk. This road cycling climb is a hard one: 29km starting from the Adriatic Sea coast all the way to Sveti Jure summit .
Cycling on the Adriatic Coast is really nice but once you get out of the main coastal road a different perspective opens up: Biokovo mountain and it’s magnificent views over the entire Dalmatian Coast.

Cycling on the Biokovo Road is better if you start early in the morning. The road in narrow and during the day there is quite a lot of traffic with cars, bikes, Tuk Tuks, busses… you name it.

On the way up to Sveti Jure (the highest point) you pass by Biokovo Skywalk – an impressive lookout hanging above a 1200m drop.
From that point you still have some kilometers to bike up to Sveti Jure. There is no water sources on the way so I would suggest to bring 2 full bottles with you. Only 2km before the summit there is a refuge where you can buy some drinks and food.
Reaching Sveti Jure is a rewarding moment for all the effort that you’ve made to cycle up there. The views over the sea coast are impressive.
This is one of the best cycling climbs I’ve did anywhere in the world. 29km from sea level, 1700m of altitude gain. I’ve took many photos ad videos while my bicycle was resting before the descent.
Descending is tricky. The road is not in perfect shape, the asphalt is not great, there are some potholes and you never know if a incoming car is right behind the next bend. Be extra careful!

Once the cycling day is over take your time to discover the region. The Dalmatian coast is full of nice places to visit. If you are on a Croatia bike tour then you can take some other bike routs around. If not, there are many attractions that worth a visit.

We stayed at the Tui Blue Makarska Hotel in the small village of Igrane. We highly recommend this accommodation and the village and it’s sea side restaurants.

Makarska city and riviera is also great starting point for the rest of your trip on the Dalmatian coast.

Take a kayaking tour of Makarska bay, we highly recommend it ( “Riviera Outdoors” organizes it – check them out !)

You can also take a day trip to Mostar. We were lucky enough to be there during the Mostar RedBull Cliff Diving Event.
