Over the years, we’ve made it our mission here at GCN to seek out and attempt to ride the steepest road in the world. We’ve tackled Ffordd Pen Llech, Bamford Clough, but now we’ve heard about a brutal climb in Italy called Salita Scanuppia. At 7.5km long with an average gradient of 17.6% and maximum of 42.8%, we think we may have finally found the world’s hardest climb. So, naturally, we sent Ollie to try to ride it!

    2. One idea from a keyboard warrior: the trick I have been using on REALLY steep stuff (in my standards, but with camping gear on the bike) is to use the full width of the road and go in a S-line! That way you reduce the climbing angle slightly. On a very slim road like this one it won't help very much, however.

    3. try it with a hardtail mountain bike (maybe a rigid front fork), with a lot of shimano chainsets you can run a 26 tooth chainring, and sram offers a 52 tooth cog. you have to use the 64bcd bolts that are kinda hidden inside

      Lowest elevation 260 m (850 ft)

    5. Really, I don't understand all that drama. It's steep, yes, everybody knows it and you know that it's steep. Close to 80° or 89°, sure 🙂 So why did you choose 38:42? Choose 50:24 and whine and complain even more 🙂 Of course you can't do it on a normal bike. Nobody expected that. Why not to get some appropriate rate, like 32:64? or 24:80? Just choose the proper gear rate and do it and show us! Without all that whining. That would be interesting. This one is a real fail.

    6. A 42 on the back is great, why a massive 38 on the front? Why not a 34, 30 or something even smaller? Why travel a thousand miles or so and use gearing that doesn't work even if you sit down and do the math on paper? Why not a 34×52 off a mountain bike?

    7. next time use a compact 50 34 or sub compact for more climbing power. glad you left the weight weenie club thinking you could brute force and snap the chain to the top of a mountain
