“The thing is not that I like to swim against the stream, it’s just that the stream is going in the wrong direction so we have to turn it around. And the more people turn around, we become the stream.” – Jan Reuss

In this episode, we meet with Jan Reuss who is taking the challenge to deliver his daughters to school using his cargo bicycle on the busy roads of Malta. Jan is one of the very few people on the island who venture to use their bicycle daily, especially one of this kind. Maltese residents seem to encounter various challenges to commute by bicycle but Jan is on a mission to change the status quo.

Do you agree with Jan’s belief that the biggest challenge in Malta to make use of such a bicycle is the missing infrastructure? Write your answer by visiting the following link:

Meet Jan closely and feel free to give us your feedback about cycling in your own city. We would also like to get to know other green heroes on the island so please reach out.

‘Word on the Street’ is an initiative in collaboration with Greenroads and Project Aegle Foundation. We document realistic mobility scenarios as suggested by the Maltese residents to feature and discuss their unique challenges or positive aspects.

Greentrips.eu is a place to discover and share your ideas, suggestions, experiences and concerns about transport and open spaces in Malta. If you’d like to contribute, visit https://www.greentrips.eu/.
