Countries such as Italy, Switzerland and France all have car-free days. It’s a day when a famous road is only available to non motorised forms of travel. Hundreds and even thousands of people join and experience the beauty of the natural world around them without the roar of engines. It is quite astonishing that Norway, with so many famous mountain roads doesn’t have a day like this. It was time to change that!

  1. Thanks that you make happend this event.I wish I had known about this than I want to be there. I live in Sykkylven 100 km away from Andalsnes..I hope and wish this event can happend again 👍

  2. Incredible, beautiful, moving. World-class footage, Matthew! May the little seed grow in all the right directions, you deserve it.

  3. Well Matthew, that was indeed a well planted seed. We won’t be able to make it for 2024 but we sure will one day soon. Keep it watered and let’s watch it grow 👏👏👏👏👏

  4. I am ready to travel up from Denmark to join you next time BUT you have to open up for people (like me) who refuses to bike around in Tour de France outfit and big mirror glasses 😉

  5. Matthew please don't stop dreaming and keep trying to make it happen. The route is just amazing and your video has brought back many wonderful memories of my bikepacking trip. Trollstigen is definitely a must see when cycling in Norway.
    Thanks for all your efforts.

  6. Goosebumps, tears in my eyes. What a wonderful video from this fantastic event. I came home thrilled at having participated. Now I get to relive the experience through your great video work. Thank you

  7. A fantastic idea. And wow what looks the Trollstigen fantastic with the autumn colours.
Last time that I was there in 2022 there was an event for walking uphill, but you could also drive by car there at that moment. But I think when you put an sign (with a time schedule) at the top and at the bottom you would have even less people that will drive there at that moment.

  8. Great video with stunning landscape, especially in autumn! I cycled Trollstigen this year while summer holiday – it was great!
May your fantastic idea grow and the dream of an entire cycling day at Trollstigen come true, Matthew!

  9. This is such a great storytelling Matthew and I really enjoyed both your video and the event! Like many comments here I vote for a yearly event! Next time I should be the one on roller skies😉 Loved it!

  10. Congratulations on organising what appeared to be such a fantastic day, I regret that it would be a bit much for me but I do hope that you are successful in persuading the Norwegian government to close the road for the day at some time in the future. Well done.

  11. I think there is a gradual movement towards the closure of certain roads for motorized traffic happening in Norway. Stalheimskleiva is a prime example. More will probably follow in years to come. But Trollstigen is just too important for tourism and also an important route for getting from A to B. So I dont think a road like that will be permanently closed for motorized vehicles. But if they could refuse access to busses and long caravans, that would already improve things massively!

  12. Shared this to my step-dad yesterday as he's an avid biker here in Norway. Today the reply was just "Can you find out when Trollstigen Day 2024 is?"

    So, good job mister!

  13. Superb initiative, sad it didn’t happen! I did climb Trollstigen last summer on a regular day, a few buses and cars but not that dangerous or complicated, it would be great to cycle there with no cars. Cheers

  14. this is such a wounderful idea – I bet in 2028 you have the road blocked, the bakery and SPAR in Sylte will have a warm welcome at the half way point organised and places in the restaurant well be fully booked. All the best! And I bought a T-shirt – every penny helps. I hope!

  15. Thanks Matthew, only been home for 6 weeks after 3 amazing months in Norway and already thinking can we get back there for trollstigen 2024? It's a long way from NZ but we're gonna try!!

  16. Matthew, if there is another meeting at Trollstigen next year…. – I will be there. Your inspiration has enabled me to do many beautiful tours in Norway. Thank you for your efforts. I am really looking forward to meeting you in person and seeing all the beautiful roads.

I drove the Trollstigen in the middle of June 2022 at 3am and had the road to myself. But an event together with lots of non-motorised people… – that would be great.

  17. Absolutely stunning scenery would love to do this ride but for me it would have to be traffic free! I really hope you can win the hearts and minds of the norwegian people/goverment and make this an annual event.

  18. Matthew, what a wonderful video mate! Every great event is pioneered by someone taking that first step, congratulations fella and believe me this will snowball I’m sure of it, I hope one day to join you- keep up the great work x

  19. I'm from Greece..i hope I'll find time and strength to be there next year…my bike is old though..but I think I could make it🙏🤞🤞🤞
