In 2022, President Vladimir Putin framed the invasion of Ukraine as a “special mission” to protect Russian speakers from genocide at the hands of “neo-Nazis”.
In a speech broadcast minutes before the assault began on Feb 24 of that year, Putin said: “We will seek to demilitarise and denazify Ukraine.” Ignoring that the country’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, is Jewish.
“It’s the Russian Federation or the pro-Russian media in Ukraine, that call Azov Battalion a Nazi organisation,” says an Azov serviceman who has asked to remain anonymous.
Adding: “From the beginning we had Jews, Chechens, Dagestan and South Americans [within our ranks].”
