Climbing Austria’s highest road with a bikepacking setup isn’t easy!

We pick up on day two of our bikepacking trip across the Austrian Alps. After a big first day and less than ideal sleeping conditions we are back on our bikes and moving early, taking on Großglockner Austria’s highest road in the heat of summer with tired legs and heavy bikes makes for a challenging day. Follow us as we start the day with a stunning decent past Krimmler Wasserfälle from our freezing sleeping spot on the snow-line of Gerlos Pass as we head towards Austria’s Highest Pass.

Route:
Day 1 – Salzburg City – Gerlos Pass (Tyrol)
Day 2 – Gerlos Pass – Großglockner

Total Distance: 183km
Total Elevation: 1810m

Bikes:
BMC Roadmachine X
Reilly Spectre
Canyon Grail
Rondo Ruut

Bikepacking Gear :
Garmin Edge 810
Apidura Saddle Bag
Ortlieb Frame Bag

We shot this entirely on a GoPro Hero 8 (mixed with some poor Hero 5 footage…sorry about that).

Camping permission was granted by the land owner.

  1. Great video! loving the content!
i have a QUESTION for you > I am hoping to cycle through Austria on my way back to the UK this summer, how did you find wild camping on the whole? I know its illegal there so wondered if its easy enough to find discreet spots along cycle paths/quiet roads? I've got a small 2 man tent at the moment.
