Teaser video “Cycling in Ireland” for Season 16 episode 2 “Active Travel”
Dr Lara Dungan investigates if our roads are safe to cycle on, featuring an extended interview with Ciarán Ferrie from I Bike Dublin, architect Ian Noel Smyth and Heather Boyle from Cycling Ireland.
Build safe segregated cycle infrastructure that forms a coherent network. And to those that say things like 'Dublin is an old city & its streets are too narrow for cycle-lanes' – The streets in Amsterdam & Utrecht are just the same, if not narrower than Dublin, so it most definitely can be done. All it takes is political will, and unfortunately that's sorely lacking at the moment.
Increase cycling budget in steps up to 20%. Get moving on the large number of stalled cycling route projects (Liffey, Dodder, Portobello-Kilmainham.) All schools have their routes upgraded and ask parents not to drive their kids there. Workplaces redeploy some car parking to cycle parking. Consider paying employees who cycle a small bonus. Get on with BusCoonects which includes cycling priority as well as bus.
So what im taking from this video is: -Be extremely careful in a left turn and watch out for any vehicle coming from behind. -If a vehicle is close behind you in a left turn assume the vehicle is turning and slow down a bit so it can turn without hitting you. -Avoid skinny roads as much as possible. -Buy a really loud fucking horn.
Also i shouldn't need to even write this but i guess it can help some people: -Dont put yourself in the middle of two busses. -Watch out from dumb pedestrians. -Wear a fucking helmet. -If you see a vehicle turning your way let him cross. the person inside of it may be in a bigger hurry than you, may be dumber than you and has a protective metalic cage around that hurts if you hit it.
Also i want to share a good trick i use when im super close to the cars on my side and the traffic is going slow: whistle o sing a song that you like and dont go too fast. that way cars can hear you coming from behind and you have the posibility to avoid anything that can suddently block your way.
For a bit of balance stick up a few vids of how cyclists actually behave on the road red lights/ footpaths ect . Also the lady at the end who "just made it" between those buses should have just waited behind them instead of trying to dangerously lane split, she also wasnt wearing a helmet so not a great advertisement for bike safety . Nobody forces bikes to squeeze between other vehicles ,if there is no cycle lane take control of your lane and wait in traffic 👍

Dutch style infrastructure. Make every school require their main routes to have segregated cycle lanes.
Brilliant There Needs to be more awareness and action for change.
Thanks everyone for the comments and participating in an important dialogue about making our cities safer and more attractive to cycle in.

Plenty of cyclists not wearing full face helmets or motorcycle armour
