In the summer of 2017, our family returned to Europe to do another awesome bike tour. We started in Amsterdam and bicycled 800 km in a circle to Brussels and back to Amsterdam. This part of the bike tour takes us from Brussels to Antwerp.

    1. From Mechelen onwards you should have taken the cycle path next to the railway towards Antwerp. Look for "F1 fietsostrade Antwerpen-Mechelen-Brussel". It will guide you to the website of the province of Antwerp. Unfortunatly it is all in Dutch but there is a link to download a gpx.

    2. The roads in Belgium are not that good compared to the roads in the Netherlands.
In the Netherlands, the road tax is high compared to most countries and that tax is used to keep the roads good and build new roads. Cities renew roads as they get bad where in Belgium, they just close the hole or leave it there.
Also the Netherlands has rules for roads on how they must be Don with bike lanes, parking spaces and roads for cars.

Yes cars give you space, but that is because they are used to bikes.
In the Netherlands you are also learned to give bikes space with your driving lessons. Also schools give traffic education ad a young age. Cities have special bike routes for schools where they teach children the rules on the road.
Also, as the schools begin after the summer holiday, they have on TV and on the streets info that the schools are starting. They do that, to inform that it will be bissy with children on the road again.
Cars are always wrong as they hit a bike, even as the bike drove trough red.

One savety tip. Take off your helmets. It sounds strange, but cars will give you more space on the road. It's investigated and people that ride with a helmet are more often in a car crash than people without.
Numbers don't lie and a bike helmet gives 0 protection in a car crash. They are designed for as you fall with your bike and not against cars.

    3. Don’t use google maps for bike-tour-planning. It’s very poor bike-navigation compared to Komoot or RideWithGps which would have let you have taken the safe bike-highway from Brussels to Antwerp.

    4. This is a good example of how not to travel between Brussels and Antwerp. You have amazing paths like the F1,the road on the side of the River Schelde or the roads near the water channels. You came on the A12 which is the worst!!

My suggestion, use the Strava tool to plan the routes, they use as favorites the roads that the majority of the cyclists use. It's the best.

Come back to Belgium, I'll show around and avoid Brussels ( The worst cycling parts/spirit in Belgium are there)

    5. Hi, just some constructive feedback. Ditch google maps for bike routing. You could had a nice ride from Ghent to Brussels and from Brussels to Antwerp if you did a bit more route planning in Komoot or Strava. Google just keeps you on the busy roads. Avoid Brussels for cycling, it's the worst in Belgium

    6. I like your videos and your travel experiences. However, I think your experience with Google maps is a bit like mine in that it will take you either the long way or the sketchy way. In any case, in Antwerp there is a glimpse of two Hasidic Jewish men on the sidewalk. I thought that interesting.
