After shooting gravel in the Italian Alps, I had one day to ride before flying back home in the evening. As I wasn’t expecting to ride, I had the ‘wrong’ bike and kit really, but it didn’t matter because cycling is fun, not least when you’re in Lake Como.

In this video I ride from Como around the lake, climb a mountain for a view of Lake Lugano before riding back past Menaggio (with a beautiful view of Varenna and Bellagio). Pizza and gelato completed a top day on the bike. Surely one of the best routes/rides in Lake Como?

    1. I get you on the breakfast cosi Julliet. I suspect you wanted carbs before your Como ride but tend to resort to lots of fruit and yoghurt in the hotels I use when work sends me to Emilo Romagna.

The fake toast in single use plastic is just wrong on many levels, but my fruit consumption goes up to get around weird Italian hotel breakfasts.

    2. Hi julie I rode round lake como when I was 60 yrs old over 3 days fantastic ride only thing which was a bit scary was the tunnels I was there because my daughter was working for north face as a designer in Switzerland 😁😁👍👍

    3. Is there a better place for cycling? Yes. Try out riding round Interlaken in Switzerland. I went back there a year ago on my way to Marmotte and rode those amazing passes. Then I detoured to Italy with intention of riding round Lake Como but was disappointed with it really. Turns out that I prefer nature to cities and towns. I see why so many people are raving about lake Como but it's not my cup of tea.

    4. "I find biscuits at breakfast a bit weird."
Me, an American from the south: I feel attacked.
(and yes, I know our biscuits are not the same as your biscuits 😜)
Beautiful video! I only wish I had the means to travel. For now, I will just have to settle for riding my bike locally.

    5. The lake you want to visit in northern Italy is Lake Maggiore I'm afraid! With a little day's visit to Lake Orta. You're welcome!

    6. we live at lake Como for quit some time now and we do swim in it each year from mid May until end of August…. and we love it.. important is however to finding the right spots… 😀

    7. Love how your enthusiasm for cycling is not curbed by inadequate kit. The riding and the experience is the important part. To some extent, don't sacrifice experience for comfort. Bravo.

    8. Beautiful ride! Varenna is our favorite place in the whole world. We’ve been twice, and took the kids there for the first time last year. Seeing them swim in the lake was one of the highlights of my life. I’ve been looking, and I would like to investigate the possibility of a retirement apartment in Perledo. Just a simple two bedroom at most. Stuff is cheap now, and it’s probably just a pipe dream, but what was it like to live there? I was only up there once, but it seems perfect to me. Quiet and away from the crowds.

    9. The Italian breakfast in hotels is one thing, like the proper "English' breakfast in the UK. But most of us over here have a coffee and a brioche that's it.

    10. Lake Como.
      Magnafique (French?).
Seen Lake snakes there which put me off swimming.
Rode motorcycles 3 times now down there from Blighty.
Fantastic ride. Make a week/10 day holiday out of it.

    11. Beautiful video 😍 thanks for doing this, one question, do you know if there is a shop I can hire a gravel bike in that area ? Thank you 🙏
