Der Königssee
By boat to the Berchtesgaden National Park
The mighty rocks of the Berchtesgaden Alps fall almost vertically down to the shore of Lake Königssee, which measures 192 meters at its deepest point. If you want to discover the impressive natural scenery around Bavaria’s most famous mountain lake, you have to take the boat – and you will hear the echo.
The Königssee: Popular excursion destination in the Berchtesgadener Land
The Königssee shipping electric boat glides silently across the fjord-like lake – emerald green water glitters in the sun, the sky glows white-blue, while the trumpet echoes impressively. Surrounded by the mountains of the only Alpine national park and the mighty backdrop of the Watzmann east face, the boat trip across the Königssee is an unforgettable experience in summer and winter.
The special thing about Königssee is that it can only be visited by boat. The steep rock faces fall down to the shore, so there are no roads, footpaths or cycle paths around the lake. There is a lot to see and experience: The boat reaches the first stop, St. Bartholomä, in about 35 minutes. It is worth visiting the world-famous baroque pilgrimage church and stopping off at the historic restaurant. Freshly smoked fish is available right next door at Fischer vom Königssee. An easy, varied circular hiking trail leads from here in about 45 minutes through the forest and over the Eisbach back to the pier. Depending on the season, you can take a hike from the St. Bartholomä stop to the so-called ice chapel, not a building, but the permanent ice field at the foot of the Watzmann east wall. The walking time to the ice chapel is approx. 2 1/2 hours there and back.
Salet, the second stop on Königssee, is only served from Easter to mid-October and takes another 20 minutes from St. Bartholomä. From here you can reach the idyllic Obersee in 10 minutes and the picturesque Fischunkelalm at the end of the Obersee in another hour. Refreshing drinks and small snacks are available here in the summer months. If you’re still fit, hike for about 30 minutes to the Röthbach waterfall, the largest waterfall in Germany with a drop of 380 m. On the way back to the jetty, you can finish off by fortifying yourself, either in the Saletalm, which is traditionally run by two farmers, or in the Salet restaurant.
Königsbach-Wasserfall
The so-called infinity pool above the Königssee in the course of the Königsbach has transformed into a world-famous visitor magnet in recent years. However, this development is increasingly endangering the flora and fauna in the Berchtesgaden National Park. That’s why, after careful examination, the decision has now been made to close the area around the Gumpen for five years. This is intended to give nature time to recover.
With their special view of parts of Lake Königssee, the pools in the Königsbach waterfall make an attractive excursion destination in the Berchtesgaden National Park. While the pools used to be an insider tip, in recent years they have become a tourist attraction, especially among the younger generation. In particular, the so-called infinity pool in the upper part of the waterfall cascade quickly became well known far beyond the region through numerous posts on social networks. The media attention inevitably led to a massive increase in visitor numbers.
