Are You Training Wrong?

New research suggests you might be! Si and Dan reveal how understanding their muscle fibre types could have made them better cyclists back in the day.

In this video, they dive into the science behind muscle fibre types โ€“ fast twitch vs. slow twitch โ€“ and debate whether every cyclist should know theirs to optimize their performance and enjoy a better riding experience.

Could this be the secret to improving your training?

  1. Re: Trump Tariffs and bike imports. Back in the early 1970's the Government of Canada introduced a swingeing set of tariffs to encourage Canadian manufacturing. The Japanese bike manufacturer Sekine responded to this by establishing a factory in the wilds of Manitoba, to which framesets and parts were delivered and then assembled in Canada. They were further able to benefit by dedicating the facility to provide employment for young indigenous peoples, thereby gaining a Government subsidy. By the mid-70's Sekine bikes were the most successful bike models in Canada. – I know this because in 1977 I arrived in Canada on a 2-year contract at the University of Toronto, and bought a Sekine which remained my principal mode of transport for the duration of my contract.

It will be interesting to see if such a loophole could be used by Chinese manufacturers to establish "factories" in the US. I guess it will all depend on the way in which the legislation to impose tariffs will be worded.

  2. @1:20 @SimonRichardson who are you talking to when you say โ€œIF youโ€™re in search ofโ€ฆ. And you might know whichโ€ฆโ€ Because I really who the cyclist is that isnโ€™t in search of their N+1 and doesnโ€™t know which one it is. The only real question is, where does it fall in the list? ๐Ÿ˜‚

  3. 27:50 that's the logic I used when I bought my bike.
Not bottom of the barrel, so I wouldn't potentially ruin the experience, and also not something expensive, because I didn't know if I would keep at it, and now I already spent probably close to 3x the initial value of the bike on equipment, upgrades and other stuff.

  4. If you go into scientific details then why not mention the 3 types of muscle fibers, Type 1, 2A & 2B.
There are really good video's explaining this on RP strength channel and Jeff Nippard

  5. Re muscle type. Iโ€™ve never had a biopsy but Iโ€™m pretty sure Iโ€™m fast twitch.
At school I was uncatchable on the rugby pitch but self preservation took me away from that.
At university I got interested in triathlon and did that from 1982-2007 including 6x ironman events .. I was mediocre at best!
Recently (10yrs) Iโ€™ve been doing track sprint and actually got silver in the BMCR National Match Sprint.
Itโ€™s only taken me 65 years to work it out.

  6. The composition of fast and slow muscle fibers is influenced by both genetics and environmental factors. While your genetics set the foundation, the type of training you engage in can shape and develop your muscle fibers over time.

  7. The EU has huge tariffs on China-made bikes as well (I think even 100%?). Switzerland does not, that is why it is acutally much cheaper if you directly import such a bike into Switzerland. Bike manifacurers therefore only import parts and frames from China and assemble either in Taiwan (not China for cutoms purposes) or Europe.

  8. Thinking back 40 years to my biology degree, there was a good way of establishing jump height: a jump and reach test. Using a pen, raise your arm and mark a point at the top of your reach. Then jump and mark a second point. The distance between the two points gives a good estimate of your jump height.

  9. I actually ran 400 and 1500 meters in junior high school and high school at a fairly high level regionally. I didn't train enough, though. I felt that I could probably compete if had I trained. However, I preferred longer events. Those ones I couldn't even fathom how to be competitive, though. I'd be training with people and they would just surpass me seemingly effortlessly. So probably fast twitch. I still prefer endurance events. I guess that's good news as I near my 60's.

  10. I applaud all modern metrics and health-benefitting training methods, and at age 65, I am thankful to still be riding, with aims for a trophy or participation ribbon in the over-60 class at a gravel event or more out West where I will ride like a kid on a Sting-Ray again and probably until sunset, too, lol. And that is a great gift of cycling as we age, we may slow down yet our bodies bask in the health benefits and besides, slower rides give us more time to enjoy the view and at the finish, we can still tell stories about how fast we used to be, like our motocross friends who say the older I get, the faster I was. ๐Ÿคฃ

  11. At 50+ I can still unleash a 1000w sprint on Zwift, however my 5-20min power is pants. So, whilst I can out sprint the chap in front getting to the finish line is slow!!!

  12. At 44 I donโ€™t think have any twitch left in my muscles! As a young man, it was definitely the fast twitch world for me. Sprints and box jumps galore. Now, I can curl a mug!
