Craig Bellamy’s honeymoon period as Wales manager continued with a 0-0 draw in Turkey on Saturday night, although a late missed penalty from the Turks was needed to stretch his unbeaten run in the post to five games (W2, D3). As such, Wales now stand on the brink of posting successive unbeaten UEFA Nations League (UNL) League B campaigns.
The last of those saw the Welsh win Group B4, but if they’re to replicate that feat here, they’ll realistically have to win and hope Turkey lose against a Montenegro side who’ve lost all five of their UNL games this cycle! Coming out on top could be tricky though for a side who’ve won just one of their last five UNL home games (D2, L2), although they’ve won five of their last seven home outings in League B (D1, L1).
The picture is much clearer for Iceland here, as this game is essentially win or bust. Victory against Wales will see them secure a League A/B play-off place at Wales’ expense, consigning them to the League B/C play-off, but if Iceland fail to win it will see them in the relegation play-offs, so this game is simply ‘must win’ for Åge Hareide’s side.
A 2-0 away win against Montenegro set up this do-or-die clash, but given that was their first-ever UNL away win (D2, L6), such an important match coming on the road seems inopportune timing. A failure to win any of the last five H2Hs (D1, L4) casts further doubt over their credentials and leaves them facing a potential first-ever relegation to League C via the play-offs.
Players to watch: Dan James might get the chance to start this game, especially as six of his seven international goals arrived on this ground. Iceland’s Orri Óskarsson will be looking to be his nation’s hero having opened the scoring in three of their five UNL games this cycle.
Hot stat: Iceland have scored 2+ goals in four of their five 2024/25 UNL outings.
