I've been riding on this tire for over 1000km now and recently spotted a few cracks on my rear tire. I mainly use the bike for commuting and going to the shops. I imagine it happened because the tire pressure was a bit low at some point while I had some extra weight on the rack.

Should I just replace it?

  1. The problem is when the threads start to fail.

If the cracks are letting dirt into the threads they will fail sooner than if there were no cracks, so keep an eye on them.

  2. I would say these tires have lived their lives and are due to be out out to pasture.

Ride em for a while, but replace much sooner than later.

  3. If you’re just riding around neighborhoods and doing leisure rides, it’s most likely fine. I’ve got 90s bikes with original crunchy tires that can still hold air and go on rides. If you’re doing anything high speed, like descending a mountain, or if you plan to have any grip around fast turns or when you brake hard, they’re probably dangerous. Either way, I’d replace them, just because new tires make the ride so much nicer.

  4. It’ll hypothetically be good until it actually fails. But, if it were my tire, I’d replace it

  5. A good rule of thumb: if there’s a question, there is no question. Just go ahead and bite the bullet.
