Just got these and installed SPDs for the winter. I nearly have to twist my foot 1800 degrees for them to release. Not the case with my summer cleats. What did I do wrong?

Maybe you could specify which cleats (on both your summer and winter shoes) and pedals instead of a picture of a shoe?
