I picked this bike for free to learn how to restore an old bike, worth it?

  1. A free bike is better than no bike, so if this is the bike you have, yes.

But bikes of all stripes have gotten a lot better over time, so generally speaking, “restoring” old bikes isn’t like restoring old cars. Unless it is a bike that has collector value, it’s not generally worth it unless you particularly like that specific bike (there are exceptions, like Schwinn Paramount touring bikes or an old Sachs bike or something).

As a project it’s fine. It looks to be in good basic condition. If you want value, then something with a personal connection can be nice. Something that will sell for a big number is tricky because collectors really get into fine details. The negatives? Suspensions can be complex, there are moving parts and many standards. There is rust on the seatpost so there may be some seizing. It’s a triple and triples are less common nowadays. But the negatives are the fun part!

  3. Good find. Dissect this critter and learn what makes it tick. Much to learn and you have a dandy lab rat upon which to experiment.
