I posted recently about the solution I came up with for transporting my tandem from UK to NZ (aluminium support frame inside a car roof bag).
It turned out the airline makes you sign a waiver if you transport a bike in a 'soft-sided bag' not a 'hard-sided case' and I felt this was a bit of a 'red flag'.
I was going to just buy a tandem in NZ but then discovered the excess baggage fee I've paid is non-refundable – as this is about double what the used bikes in NZ I was looking at would cost I wasn't happy.
So, I converted the support 'frame + bag' to a 'collapsible hard-sided box' (collapsible so it can be stored under the seats in the campervan we're hiring).
I've had to take the wheels off to keep the weight down & they now go in separate bags
Box weight without the bike is 13kg. With the bike plus 2 heavy duty locks it's 30kg

Which airlines requires a wavier so I’d not book with them
